Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 38
Yehudah marries the daughter of Shua, and Er and Onan die for their wickedness; Tamar, kept waiting for Shelah, sits at the entrance of Enayim, conceives by Yehudah, is vindicated by his signet, cord and staff, and bears the twins Peretz and Zeraḥ.
38:1And it came to pass at that time, that Yehudah (Judah) went down from his brothers, and turned in to a certain Adullami (Adullamite), whose name was Ḥirah (Hirah).
38:2And Yehudah saw there a daughter of a certain Kena’ani (Canaanite), whose name was Shua (Shuah); and he took her, and went in unto her.
38:3And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er.
38:4And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan.
38:5And she yet again bore a son, and called his name Shelah; and he was at Keziv (Chezib) when she bore him.
38:6And Yehudah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
38:7And Er, Yehudah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Hashem; and Hashem slew him.
38:8And Yehudah said unto Onan, “Go in unto your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother unto her, and raise up seed for your brother.”
38:9And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.
38:10And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of Hashem; and He slew him also.
38:11Then Yehudah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow at your father’s house, till Shelah my son is grown”; for he said, “Lest he also die, as his brothers did.” And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
38:12And in process of time the daughter of Shua, Yehudah’s wife, died; and Yehudah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnah (Timnath), he and his friend Ḥirah the Adullami.
38:13And it was told Tamar, saying, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”
38:14And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat at the entrance of Enayim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
38:15When Yehudah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; because she had covered her face.
38:16And he turned unto her by the way, and said, “Come, I pray you, let me come in unto you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in unto me?”
38:17And he said, “I will send you a kid of the goats from the flock.” And she said, “Will you give me a pledge, till you send it?”
38:18And he said, “What pledge shall I give you?” And she said, “Your signet, and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” And he gave them to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.
38:19And she arose, and went away, and laid aside her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
38:20And Yehudah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullami, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand; but he did not find her.
38:21Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the harlot, who was at Enayim by the wayside?” And they said, “There has been no harlot here.”
38:22And he returned to Yehudah, and said, “I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no harlot here.’”
38:23And Yehudah said, “Let her keep them, lest we be put to shame; behold, I sent this kid, and you have not found her.”
38:24And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Yehudah, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by harlotry.” And Yehudah said, “Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.”
38:25When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, am I with child”; and she said, “Recognize, I pray you, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”
38:26And Yehudah recognized them, and said, “She has been more righteous than I; because I did not give her to Shelah my son.” And he knew her again no more.
38:27And it came to pass in the time of her giving birth, that, behold, twins were in her womb.
38:28And it came to pass, when she gave birth, that one put out his hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, “This one came out first.”
38:29And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out; and she said, “How have you broken forth? This breach be upon you!” Therefore his name was called Peretz (Pharez).
38:30And afterward came out his brother, who had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zeraḥ (Zarah).
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
