Genesis, Chapter 37

Yisrael loves Yosef above his brothers and gives him a coat of many colors; Yosef dreams that his brothers bow to him, and when he comes to them at Dotan they cast him into a pit, sell him, deceive Yaakov with the bloodied coat, and Yosef is sold in Mitzrayim to Potifar.

Yosef and his brothers

37:1And Yaakov (Jacob) dwelt in the land where his father had sojourned, in the land of Kena’an (Canaan).

37:2These are the generations of Yaakov. Yosef (Joseph), being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Yosef brought unto his father an evil report of them.

37:3Now Yisrael (Israel) loved Yosef more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age; and he made him a coat of many colors.

37:4And when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

Yosef’s dreams

37:5And Yosef dreamed a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him yet the more.

37:6And he said unto them, “Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

37:7for, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and bowed down to my sheaf.”

37:8And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us?” And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

37:9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed another dream; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”

37:10And he told it to his father, and to his brothers; and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to you to the earth?”

37:11And his brothers envied him; but his father kept the matter in mind.

Yosef sent to his brothers

37:12And his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem (Sichem).

37:13And Yisrael said unto Yosef, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you unto them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.”

37:14And he said to him, “Go, I pray you, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Ḥevron (Hebron), and he came to Shechem.

37:15And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field; and the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?”

37:16And he said, “I am seeking my brothers; tell me, I pray you, where they are feeding the flock.”

37:17And the man said, “They have departed from here; for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dotan (Dothan).’” And Yosef went after his brothers, and found them in Dotan.

The brothers plot against Yosef

37:18And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

37:19And they said one to another, “Behold, this dreamer is coming.

37:20Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘Some evil beast has devoured him’; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.”

37:21And Reuven (Reuben) heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, “Let us not take his life.”

37:22And Reuven said unto them, “Shed no blood; cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him”; that he might rescue him out of their hands, to bring him back to his father.

37:23And it came to pass, when Yosef had come unto his brothers, that they stripped Yosef of his coat, the coat of many colors that was on him;

37:24and they took him, and cast him into the pit; and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.

Yosef sold to the Yishme’elim

37:25And they sat down to eat bread; and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a caravan of Yishme’elim (Ishmeelites) was coming from Gil’ad (Gilead) with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Mitzrayim (Egypt).

37:26And Yehudah (Judah) said unto his brothers, “What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?

37:27Come, and let us sell him to the Yishme’elim, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh.” And his brothers hearkened.

37:28Then there passed by Midyanim (Midianites), merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Yosef out of the pit, and sold Yosef to the Yishme’elim for twenty pieces of silver; and they brought Yosef into Mitzrayim.

37:29And Reuven returned unto the pit; and, behold, Yosef was not in the pit; and he tore his clothes.

37:30And he returned unto his brothers, and said, “The child is gone; and I, where shall I go?”

Yaakov mourns for Yosef

37:31And they took Yosef’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;

37:32and they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “This we have found; recognize now whether it is your son’s coat or not.”

37:33And he recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s coat; an evil beast has devoured him; Yosef is without doubt torn in pieces.”

37:34And Yaakov tore his garments, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

37:35And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, “For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning.” Thus his father wept for him.

37:36And the Medanim (Midianites) sold him into Mitzrayim unto Potifar (Potiphar), an officer of Par’oh (Pharaoh), the captain of the guard.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
