The generations of Esav, who is Edom: his wives and sons born in Kena’an, his move to Mount Se’ir, the chiefs descended from his sons, the sons and chiefs of Se’ir the Ḥori, the kings who reigned in Edom, and the chiefs of Esav by their places.
36:1Now these are the generations of Esav (Esau), who is Edom.
אוְאֵ֛לֶּה תֹּלְד֥וֹת עֵשָׂ֖ו ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם׃
36:2Esav took his wives of the daughters of Kena’an (Canaan): Adah the daughter of Elon the Ḥitti (Hittite), and Oholivamah (Aholibamah) the daughter of Anah the daughter of Tzivon (Zibeon) the Ḥivi;
בעֵשָׂ֛ו לָקַ֥ח אֶת־נָשָׁ֖יו מִבְּנ֣וֹת כְּנָ֑עַן אֶת־עָדָ֗ה בַּת־אֵילוֹן֙ הַֽחִתִּ֔י וְאֶת־אָהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ בַּת־עֲנָ֔ה בַּת־צִבְע֖וֹן הַֽחִוִּֽי׃
36:3and Basmat (Bashemath), Yishma’el’s (Ishmael’s) daughter, sister of Nevayot (Nebajoth).
גוְאֶת־בָּשְׂמַ֥ת בַּת־יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל אֲח֥וֹת נְבָיֽוֹת׃
36:4And Adah bore to Esav Elifaz (Eliphaz); and Basmat bore Re’uel (Reuel);
דוַתֵּ֧לֶד עָדָ֛ה לְעֵשָׂ֖ו אֶת־אֱלִיפָ֑ז וּבָ֣שְׂמַ֔ת יָלְדָ֖ה אֶת־רְעוּאֵֽל׃
36:5and Oholivamah bore Ye’ush (Jeush), and Yalam (Jaalam), and Koraḥ (Korah). These are the sons of Esav, who were born unto him in the land of Kena’an.
הוְאָהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ יָֽלְדָ֔ה אֶת־יעיש (קרי יְע֥וּשׁ) וְאֶת־יַעְלָ֖ם וְאֶת־קֹ֑רַח אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י עֵשָׂ֔ו אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֻלְּדוּ־ל֖וֹ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃
36:6And Esav took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his possessions, which he had gotten in the land of Kena’an; and went into a land away from his brother Yaakov (Jacob).
ווַיִּקַּ֣ח עֵשָׂ֡ו אֶת־נָ֠שָׁיו וְאֶת־בָּנָ֣יו וְאֶת־בְּנֹתָיו֮ וְאֶת־כָּל־נַפְשׁ֣וֹת בֵּיתוֹ֒ וְאֶת־מִקְנֵ֣הוּ וְאֶת־כָּל־בְּהֶמְתּ֗וֹ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־קִנְיָנ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָכַ֖שׁ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אֶל־אֶ֔רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֖י יַעֲקֹ֥ב אָחִֽיו׃
36:7For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land in which they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.
זכִּֽי־הָיָ֧ה רְכוּשָׁ֛ם רָ֖ב מִשֶּׁ֣בֶת יַחְדָּ֑ו וְלֹ֨א יָֽכְלָ֜ה אֶ֤רֶץ מְגֽוּרֵיהֶם֙ לָשֵׂ֣את אֹתָ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֖י מִקְנֵיהֶֽם׃
36:8Thus Esav dwelt in Mount Se’ir (Seir); Esav is Edom.
חוַיֵּ֤שֶׁב עֵשָׂו֙ בְּהַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר עֵשָׂ֖ו ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם׃
36:9And these are the generations of Esav the father of the Edomites in Mount Se’ir.
טוְאֵ֛לֶּה תֹּלְד֥וֹת עֵשָׂ֖ו אֲבִ֣י אֱד֑וֹם בְּהַ֖ר שֵׂעִֽיר׃
36:10These are the names of Esav’s sons: Elifaz the son of Adah the wife of Esav, Re’uel the son of Basmat the wife of Esav.
יאֵ֖לֶּה שְׁמ֣וֹת בְּנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו אֱלִיפַ֗ז בֶּן־עָדָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֔ו רְעוּאֵ֕ל בֶּן־בָּשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
36:11And the sons of Elifaz were Teiman (Teman), Omar, Tzefo (Zepho), and Gatam, and Kenaz.
יאוַיִּהְי֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י אֱלִיפָ֑ז תֵּימָ֣ן אוֹמָ֔ר צְפ֥וֹ וְגַעְתָּ֖ם וּקְנַֽז׃
36:12And Timna was concubine to Elifaz, Esav’s son; and she bore to Elifaz Amalek. These were the sons of Adah, Esav’s wife.
יבוְתִמְנַ֣ע ׀ הָיְתָ֣ה פִילֶ֗גֶשׁ לֶֽאֱלִיפַז֙ בֶּן־עֵשָׂ֔ו וַתֵּ֥לֶד לֶאֱלִיפַ֖ז אֶת־עֲמָלֵ֑ק אֵ֕לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י עָדָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
36:13And these are the sons of Re’uel: Naḥat (Nahath), and Zeraḥ (Zerah), Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basmat, Esav’s wife.
יגוְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י רְעוּאֵ֔ל נַ֥חַת וָזֶ֖רַח שַׁמָּ֣ה וּמִזָּ֑ה אֵ֣לֶּ֣ה הָי֔וּ בְּנֵ֥י בָשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
36:14And these were the sons of Oholivamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Tzivon, Esav’s wife; and she bore to Esav Ye’ush, and Yalam, and Koraḥ.
ידוְאֵ֣לֶּה הָי֗וּ בְּנֵ֨י אָהֳלִיבָמָ֧ה בַת־עֲנָ֛ה בַּת־צִבְע֖וֹן אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֑ו וַתֵּ֣לֶד לְעֵשָׂ֔ו אֶת־יעיש (קרי יְע֥וּשׁ) וְאֶת־יַעְלָ֖ם וְאֶת־קֹֽרַח׃
36:15These were the chiefs of the sons of Esav: the sons of Elifaz the firstborn of Esav: chief Teiman, chief Omar, chief Tzefo, chief Kenaz,
טואֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו בְּנֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּכ֣וֹר עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֤וּף תֵּימָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף אוֹמָ֔ר אַלּ֥וּף צְפ֖וֹ אַלּ֥וּף קְנַֽז׃
36:16chief Koraḥ, chief Gatam, chief Amalek. These are the chiefs that came of Elifaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.
טזאַלּֽוּף־קֹ֛רַח אַלּ֥וּף גַּעְתָּ֖ם אַלּ֣וּף עֲמָלֵ֑ק אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֔וֹם אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י עָדָֽה׃
36:17And these are the sons of Re’uel, Esav’s son: chief Naḥat, chief Zeraḥ, chief Shammah, chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs that came of Re’uel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Basmat, Esav’s wife.
יזוְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵ֤י רְעוּאֵל֙ בֶּן־עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֥וּף נַ֨חַת֙ אַלּ֣וּף זֶ֔רַח אַלּ֥וּף שַׁמָּ֖ה אַלּ֣וּף מִזָּ֑ה אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֤י רְעוּאֵל֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֔וֹם אֵ֕לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י בָשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
36:18And these are the sons of Oholivamah, Esav’s wife: chief Ye’ush, chief Yalam, chief Koraḥ. These were the chiefs that came of Oholivamah the daughter of Anah, Esav’s wife.
יחוְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵ֤י אָהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֔ו אַלּ֥וּף יְע֛וּשׁ אַלּ֥וּף יַעְלָ֖ם אַלּ֣וּף קֹ֑רַח אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֞י אָֽהֳלִיבָמָ֛ה בַּת־עֲנָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
36:19These are the sons of Esav, and these are their chiefs; he is Edom.
יטאֵ֧לֶּה בְנֵי־עֵשָׂ֛ו וְאֵ֥לֶּה אַלּוּפֵיהֶ֖ם ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם׃
36:20These are the sons of Se’ir the Ḥori (Horite), who inhabited the land: Lotan, and Shoval (Shobal), and Tzivon, and Anah,
כאֵ֤לֶּה בְנֵֽי־שֵׂעִיר֙ הַחֹרִ֔י יֹשְׁבֵ֖י הָאָ֑רֶץ לוֹטָ֥ן וְשׁוֹבָ֖ל וְצִבְע֥וֹן וַעֲנָֽה׃
36:21and Dishon, and Etzer (Ezer), and Dishan. These are the chiefs of the Ḥori, the children of Se’ir in the land of Edom.
כאוְדִשׁ֥וֹן וְאֵ֖צֶר וְדִישָׁ֑ן אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֧י הַחֹרִ֛י בְּנֵ֥י שֵׂעִ֖יר בְּאֶ֥רֶץ אֱדֽוֹם׃
36:22And the children of Lotan were Ḥori and Heimam (Hemam); and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
כבוַיִּהְי֥וּ בְנֵי־לוֹטָ֖ן חֹרִ֣י וְהֵימָ֑ם וַאֲח֥וֹת לוֹטָ֖ן תִּמְנָֽע׃
36:23And the children of Shoval were these: Alvan, and Manaḥat (Manahath), and Eival (Ebal), Shefo (Shepho), and Onam.
כגוְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י שׁוֹבָ֔ל עַלְוָ֥ן וּמָנַ֖חַת וְעֵיבָ֑ל שְׁפ֖וֹ וְאוֹנָֽם׃
36:24And these are the children of Tzivon: Ayah (Ajah), and Anah; this was that Anah who found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the donkeys of Tzivon his father.
כדוְאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־צִבְע֖וֹן וְאַיָּ֣ה וַעֲנָ֑ה ה֣וּא עֲנָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר מָצָ֤א אֶת־הַיֵּמִם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר בִּרְעֹת֥וֹ אֶת־הַחֲמֹרִ֖ים לְצִבְע֥וֹן אָבִֽיו׃
36:25And the children of Anah were these: Dishon, and Oholivamah the daughter of Anah.
כהוְאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־עֲנָ֖ה דִּשֹׁ֑ן וְאָהֳלִיבָמָ֖ה בַּת־עֲנָֽה׃
36:26And these are the children of Dishon: Ḥemdan (Hemdan), and Eshban, and Yitran (Ithran), and Keran (Cheran).
כווְאֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י דִישָׁ֑ן חֶמְדָּ֥ן וְאֶשְׁבָּ֖ן וְיִתְרָ֥ן וּכְרָֽן׃
36:27The children of Etzer are these: Bilhan, and Za’avan (Zaavan), and Akan.
כזאֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵי־אֵ֑צֶר בִּלְהָ֥ן וְזַעֲוָ֖ן וַעֲקָֽן׃
36:28The children of Dishan are these: Utz (Uz), and Aran.
כחאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־דִישָׁ֖ן ע֥וּץ וַאֲרָֽן׃
36:29These are the chiefs that came of the Ḥori: chief Lotan, chief Shoval, chief Tzivon, chief Anah,
כטאֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י הַחֹרִ֑י אַלּ֤וּף לוֹטָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף שׁוֹבָ֔ל אַלּ֥וּף צִבְע֖וֹן אַלּ֥וּף עֲנָֽה׃
36:30chief Dishon, chief Etzer, chief Dishan. These are the chiefs that came of the Ḥori, according to their chiefs in the land of Se’ir.
לאַלּ֥וּף דִּשֹׁ֛ן אַלּ֥וּף אֵ֖צֶר אַלּ֣וּף דִּישָׁ֑ן אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֧י הַחֹרִ֛י לְאַלֻּפֵיהֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ שֵׂעִֽיר׃
36:31And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Yisrael (Israel).
לאוְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ הַמְּלָכִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָלְכ֖וּ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֑וֹם לִפְנֵ֥י מְלָךְ־מֶ֖לֶךְ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
36:32And Bela (Belah) the son of Be’or (Beor) reigned in Edom; and the name of his city was Dinhavah (Dinhabah).
לבוַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ בֶּאֱד֔וֹם בֶּ֖לַע בֶּן־בְּע֑וֹר וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ דִּנְהָֽבָה׃
36:33And Bela died, and Yovav (Jobab) the son of Zeraḥ of Botzrah (Bozrah) reigned in his place.
לגוַיָּ֖מָת בָּ֑לַע וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו יוֹבָ֥ב בֶּן־זֶ֖רַח מִבָּצְרָֽה׃
36:34And Yovav died, and Ḥusham (Husham) of the land of the Teimani (Temani) reigned in his place.
לדוַיָּ֖מָת יוֹבָ֑ב וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו חֻשָׁ֖ם מֵאֶ֥רֶץ הַתֵּימָנִֽי׃
36:35And Ḥusham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who struck Midyan (Midian) in the field of Moav (Moab), reigned in his place; and the name of his city was Avit (Avith).
להוַיָּ֖מָת חֻשָׁ֑ם וַיִּמְלֹ֨ךְ תַּחְתָּ֜יו הֲדַ֣ד בֶּן־בְּדַ֗ד הַמַּכֶּ֤ה אֶת־מִדְיָן֙ בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה מוֹאָ֔ב וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ עֲוִֽית׃
36:36And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place.
לווַיָּ֖מָת הֲדָ֑ד וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו שַׂמְלָ֖ה מִמַּשְׂרֵקָֽה׃
36:37And Samlah died, and Shaul (Saul) of Reḥovot (Rehoboth) by the river reigned in his place.
לזוַיָּ֖מָת שַׂמְלָ֑ה וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו שָׁא֖וּל מֵרְחֹב֥וֹת הַנָּהָֽר׃
36:38And Shaul died, and Baal-Ḥanan (Baal-hanan) the son of Achbor reigned in his place.
לחוַיָּ֖מָת שָׁא֑וּל וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו בַּ֥עַל חָנָ֖ן בֶּן־עַכְבּֽוֹר׃
36:39And Baal-Ḥanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was Pa’u (Pau); and his wife’s name was Meheitavel (Mehetabel), the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mei-Zahav (Mezahab).
לטוַיָּמָת֮ בַּ֣עַל חָנָ֣ן בֶּן־עַכְבּוֹר֒ וַיִּמְלֹ֤ךְ תַּחְתָּיו֙ הֲדַ֔ר וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ פָּ֑עוּ וְשֵׁ֨ם אִשְׁתּ֤וֹ מְהֵֽיטַבְאֵל֙ בַּת־מַטְרֵ֔ד בַּ֖ת מֵ֥י זָהָֽב׃
36:40And these are the names of the chiefs that came of Esav, according to their families, after their places, by their names: chief Timna, chief Alvah, chief Yetet (Jetheth),
מוְ֠אֵלֶּה שְׁמ֞וֹת אַלּוּפֵ֤י עֵשָׂו֙ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם לִמְקֹמֹתָ֖ם בִּשְׁמֹתָ֑ם אַלּ֥וּף תִּמְנָ֛ע אַלּ֥וּף עַֽלְוָ֖ה אַלּ֥וּף יְתֵֽת׃
36:41chief Oholivamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon,
מאאַלּ֧וּף אָהֳלִיבָמָ֛ה אַלּ֥וּף אֵלָ֖ה אַלּ֥וּף פִּינֹֽן׃
36:42chief Kenaz, chief Teiman, chief Mivtzar (Mibzar),
מבאַלּ֥וּף קְנַ֛ז אַלּ֥וּף תֵּימָ֖ן אַלּ֥וּף מִבְצָֽר׃
36:43chief Magdi’el (Magdiel), chief Iram. These are the chiefs of Edom, according to their dwellings in the land of their possession. He is Esav, the father of the Edomites.
מגאַלּ֥וּף מַגְדִּיאֵ֖ל אַלּ֣וּף עִירָ֑ם אֵ֣לֶּה ׀ אַלּוּפֵ֣י אֱד֗וֹם לְמֹֽשְׁבֹתָם֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזָּתָ֔ם ה֥וּא עֵשָׂ֖ו אֲבִ֥י אֱדֽוֹם׃

- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
