Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 35
Yaakov puts away the foreign gods and goes up to Beit-El, where he builds an altar and God names him Yisrael and blesses him; Devorah dies, Raḥel dies giving birth to Binyamin on the way to Efrat, the twelve sons are listed, and Esav and Yaakov bury Yitzḥak.
35:1And God said unto Yaakov (Jacob), “Arise, go up to Beit-El (Beth-el), and dwell there; and make there an altar unto God, who appeared unto you when you fled from the face of Esav (Esau) your brother.”
35:2Then Yaakov said unto his household, and to all that were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments;
35:3and let us arise, and go up to Beit-El; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.”
35:4And they gave unto Yaakov all the foreign gods which were in their hand, and the earrings which were in their ears; and Yaakov hid them under the terebinth which was by Shechem (Sichem).
35:5And they journeyed; and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Yaakov.
35:6So Yaakov came to Luz, which is in the land of Kena’an (that is, Beit-El), he and all the people that were with him.
35:7And he built there an altar, and called the place El-Beit-El (El-beth-el); because there God was revealed unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
35:8And Devorah (Deborah), Rivkah’s (Rebekah’s) nurse, died, and she was buried below Beit-El under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon-Bachut (Allon-bachuth).
35:9And God appeared unto Yaakov again, when he came out of Paddan-Aram (Padan-aram), and blessed him.
35:10And God said unto him, “Your name is Yaakov; your name shall not be called any more Yaakov, but Yisrael (Israel) shall be your name”; and He called his name Yisrael.
35:11And God said unto him, “I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of you, and kings shall come out of your loins;
35:12and the land which I gave Avraham (Abraham) and Yitzḥak (Isaac), to you I will give it, and to your seed after you will I give the land.”
35:13And God went up from him in the place where He spoke with him.
35:14And Yaakov set up a pillar in the place where He spoke with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.
35:15And Yaakov called the name of the place where God spoke with him Beit-El.
35:16And they journeyed from Beit-El; and there was still some way to come to Efrat (Ephrath); and Raḥel (Rachel) gave birth, and she had hard labor.
35:17And it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said unto her, “Do not fear; for this also is a son for you.”
35:18And it came to pass, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni (Ben-oni); but his father called him Binyamin (Benjamin).
35:19And Raḥel died, and was buried on the way to Efrat, which is Beit Leḥem (Bethlehem).
35:20And Yaakov set a pillar upon her grave; that is the pillar of Raḥel’s grave unto this day.
35:21And Yisrael journeyed, and spread his tent beyond Migdal-Eder (the tower of Edar).
35:22And it came to pass, when Yisrael dwelt in that land, that Reuven (Reuben) went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Yisrael heard of it. Now the sons of Yaakov were twelve:
35:23the sons of Leah: Reuven, Yaakov’s firstborn, and Shimon (Simeon), and Levi, and Yehudah (Judah), and Yissachar (Issachar), and Zevulun (Zebulun);
35:24the sons of Raḥel: Yosef (Joseph), and Binyamin;
35:25and the sons of Bilhah, Raḥel’s handmaid: Dan, and Naftali (Naphtali);
35:26and the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid: Gad, and Asher. These are the sons of Yaakov, who were born to him in Paddan-Aram.
35:27And Yaakov came unto Yitzḥak his father unto Mamre, unto Kiryat-Arba (Kirjath-arba), which is Ḥevron (Hebron), where Avraham and Yitzḥak sojourned.
35:28And the days of Yitzḥak were a hundred and eighty years.
35:29And Yitzḥak breathed his last, and died, and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days; and his sons Esav and Yaakov buried him.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
