Genesis, Chapter 34

Shechem the son of Ḥamor takes Dinah and defiles her, then seeks her as his wife; the sons of Yaakov answer deceitfully that every male must be circumcised, and on the third day Shimon and Levi slay the men of the city and Yaakov’s sons plunder it.

Dinah and Shechem

34:1And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she bore unto Yaakov (Jacob), went out to see the daughters of the land.

34:2And when Shechem (Sichem) the son of Ḥamor (Hamor) the Ḥivi (Hivite), prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.

34:3And his soul clung unto Dinah the daughter of Yaakov, and he loved the maiden, and spoke kindly unto the maiden.

34:4And Shechem spoke unto his father Ḥamor, saying, “Get me this girl to wife.”

34:5And Yaakov heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; now his sons were with his cattle in the field; and Yaakov held his peace until they came.

Ḥamor’s proposal

34:6And Ḥamor the father of Shechem went out unto Yaakov to speak with him.

34:7And the sons of Yaakov came in from the field when they heard it; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had wrought a disgraceful thing in Yisrael (Israel) in lying with Yaakov’s daughter, a thing which ought not to be done.

34:8And Ḥamor spoke with them, saying, “The soul of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; I pray you give her to him to wife.

34:9And make marriages with us; give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.

34:10And you shall dwell with us; and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade in it, and get possessions in it.”

34:11And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and what you shall say unto me I will give.

34:12Ask of me ever so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as you shall say unto me; but give me the maiden to wife.”

The condition of circumcision

34:13And the sons of Yaakov answered Shechem and Ḥamor his father deceitfully, and spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister;

34:14and they said unto them, “We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that would be a reproach unto us.

34:15Only on this condition will we consent unto you: if you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised;

34:16then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.

34:17But if you will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.”

34:18And their words pleased Ḥamor, and Shechem, Ḥamor’s son.

34:19And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he had delight in Yaakov’s daughter; and he was more honored than all the house of his father.

At the gate of the city

34:20And Ḥamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying,

34:21“These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.

34:22Only on this condition will the men consent unto us to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.

34:23Shall not their cattle and their possessions and every beast of theirs be ours? Only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.”

34:24And unto Ḥamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.

Shimon and Levi slay the city

34:25And it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Yaakov, Shimon (Simeon) and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took each man his sword, and came upon the city unawares, and slew all the males.

34:26And they slew Ḥamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went out.

34:27The sons of Yaakov came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.

34:28They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field;

34:29and all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives they took captive, and plundered even all that was in the house.

34:30And Yaakov said to Shimon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Kena’ani (Canaanites) and the Perizzi (Perizzites); and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and strike me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.”

34:31And they said, “Should he deal with our sister as with a harlot?”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
