Genesis, Chapter 33

Yaakov bows before Esav, who runs to embrace him; Esav accepts his present after urging and returns to Se’ir, and Yaakov journeys to Sukkot and then to Shechem, where he buys a field and erects an altar called El-Elohei-Yisrael.

Yaakov meets Esav

33:1And Yaakov (Jacob) lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esav (Esau) was coming, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Raḥel (Rachel), and unto the two handmaids.

33:2And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Raḥel and Yosef (Joseph) last.

33:3And he himself passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

33:4And Esav ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him; and they wept.

33:5And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, “Who are these with you?” And he said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”

33:6Then the handmaids came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

33:7And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves; and after came Yosef near and Raḥel, and they bowed themselves.

33:8And he said, “What do you mean by all this camp which I met?” And he said, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”

33:9And Esav said, “I have enough, my brother; keep that which you have unto yourself.”

33:10And Yaakov said, “No, I pray you, if now I have found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand; for therefore I have seen your face, as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

33:11Take, I pray you, my blessing that is brought to you; because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have all.” And he urged him, and he took it.

Esav returns to Se’ir

33:12And he said, “Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before you.”

33:13And he said unto him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me; and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.

33:14Let my lord, I pray you, pass over before his servant; and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle that go before me and the pace of the children, until I come unto my lord unto Se’ir (Seir).”

33:15And Esav said, “Let me now leave with you some of the people that are with me.” And he said, “Why is this? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”

33:16So Esav returned that day on his way unto Se’ir.

Sukkot and Shechem

33:17And Yaakov journeyed to Sukkot (Succoth), and built himself a house, and made booths for his cattle; therefore the name of the place is called Sukkot.

33:18And Yaakov came in peace to the city of Shechem (Sichem), which is in the land of Kena’an (Canaan), when he came from Paddan-Aram (Padan-aram); and encamped before the city.

33:19And he bought the parcel of the field, where he had spread his tent, from the hand of the children of Ḥamor (Hamor), Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of money.

33:20And he erected there an altar, and called it El-Elohei-Yisrael (El-elohe-Israel).

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
