Genesis, Chapter 29

Yaakov comes to a well in the land of the east, meets Raḥel and is welcomed by Lavan; he serves seven years for Raḥel, is given Leah instead, serves seven more years for Raḥel, and Leah bears Reuven, Shimon, Levi and Yehudah.

Yaakov meets Raḥel at the well

29:1Then Yaakov (Jacob) went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

29:2And he looked, and behold, a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks; and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth.

29:3And there all the flocks were gathered; and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in its place.

29:4And Yaakov said unto them, “My brothers, where are you from?” And they said, “We are from Ḥaran (Haran).”

29:5And he said unto them, “Do you know Lavan (Laban) the son of Naḥor (Nahor)?” And they said, “We know him.”

29:6And he said unto them, “Is he well?” And they said, “He is well; and, behold, Raḥel (Rachel) his daughter is coming with the sheep.”

29:7And he said, “Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them.”

29:8And they said, “We cannot, until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.”

29:9And while he was still speaking with them, Raḥel came with her father’s sheep; for she kept them.

29:10And it came to pass, when Yaakov saw Raḥel the daughter of Lavan his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Lavan his mother’s brother, that Yaakov went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Lavan his mother’s brother.

29:11And Yaakov kissed Raḥel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

29:12And Yaakov told Raḥel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rivkah’s (Rebekah’s) son; and she ran and told her father.

Lavan welcomes Yaakov

29:13And it came to pass, when Lavan heard the tidings of Yaakov his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Lavan all these things.

29:14And Lavan said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” And he stayed with him the space of a month.

Seven years for Raḥel

29:15And Lavan said unto Yaakov, “Because you are my brother, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?”

29:16And Lavan had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Raḥel.

29:17Leah was tender-eyed; but Raḥel was beautiful and well-favored.

29:18And Yaakov loved Raḥel; and said, “I will serve you seven years for Raḥel your younger daughter.”

29:19And Lavan said, “It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man; stay with me.”

29:20And Yaakov served seven years for Raḥel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had for her.

Lavan deceives Yaakov

29:21And Yaakov said unto Lavan, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.”

29:22And Lavan gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

29:23And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.

29:24And Lavan gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for a handmaid.

29:25And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah; and he said to Lavan, “What is this you have done unto me? Did I not serve with you for Raḥel? Why then have you deceived me?”

29:26And Lavan said, “It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

29:27Fulfill her week, and we will give you this also for the service which you shall serve with me yet seven other years.”

29:28And Yaakov did so, and fulfilled her week; and he gave him Raḥel his daughter to wife also.

29:29And Lavan gave to Raḥel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

29:30And he went in also unto Raḥel, and he loved also Raḥel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.

The sons of Leah

29:31And when Hashem saw that Leah was hated, He opened her womb; but Raḥel was barren.

29:32And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Reuven (Reuben); for she said, “Surely Hashem has looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.”

29:33And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, “Because Hashem has heard that I was hated, He has therefore given me this son also”; and she called his name Shimon (Simeon).

29:34And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, “Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have borne him three sons”; therefore was his name called Levi.

29:35And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she said, “Now will I praise Hashem”; therefore she called his name Yehudah (Judah); and she left off bearing.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
