Genesis, Chapter 3

The serpent persuades the woman to eat of the forbidden tree and she gives to her husband; Hashem God questions them, curses the serpent, pronounces sorrow on the woman and toil on Adam, clothes them, and sends them out of the Garden of Eden.

The serpent and the woman

3:1Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which Hashem God had made. And he said unto the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

3:2And the woman said unto the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden;

3:3but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’”

3:4And the serpent said unto the woman, “You shall not surely die;

3:5for God knows that in the day you eat of it, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as God, knowing good and evil.”

3:6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit, and ate, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he ate.

3:7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Hashem God questions them

3:8And they heard the voice of Hashem God walking in the garden in the cool of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Hashem God among the trees of the garden.

3:9And Hashem God called unto Adam (Mankind), and said unto him, “Where are you?”

3:10And he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.”

3:11And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you that you should not eat?”

3:12And the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.”

3:13And Hashem God said unto the woman, “What is this that you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The curses pronounced

3:14And Hashem God said unto the serpent, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.

3:15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”

3:16Unto the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in sorrow you shall bring forth children; and your desire shall be to your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

3:17And unto Adam He said, “Because you have listened unto the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow you shall eat of it all the days of your life.

3:18Thorns also and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the herb of the field.

3:19In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return unto the ground; for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and unto dust you shall return.”

Sent out of the garden

3:20And the man called his wife’s name Ḥavah (Eve), because she was the mother of all living.

3:21Unto Adam also and to his wife Hashem God made coats of skins, and clothed them.

3:22And Hashem God said, “Behold, the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever—”

3:23therefore Hashem God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken.

3:24So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the Garden of Eden the cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way of the tree of life.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
