Genesis, Chapter 4

Ḥavah bears Kayin and Hevel; Hashem accepts Hevel’s offering, Kayin kills his brother and is sent out as a wanderer with a mark; Kayin’s line runs to Lemech and his sons, and Shet and Enosh are born.

Kayin and Hevel

4:1And Adam (Mankind) knew Ḥavah (Eve) his wife; and she conceived, and bore Kayin, and said, “I have gotten a man from Hashem.”

4:2And she again bore his brother Hevel. And Hevel was a keeper of sheep, but Kayin was a tiller of the ground.

4:3And in the process of time it came to pass, that Kayin brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto Hashem.

4:4And Hevel, he also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And Hashem had respect unto Hevel and to his offering;

4:5but unto Kayin and to his offering He had not respect. And Kayin was very angry, and his countenance fell.

4:6And Hashem said unto Kayin, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?

4:7If you do well, shall you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And unto you shall be its desire, and you shall rule over it.”

The murder of Hevel

4:8And Kayin talked with Hevel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Kayin rose up against Hevel his brother, and slew him.

4:9And Hashem said unto Kayin, “Where is Hevel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”

4:10And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries unto Me from the ground.

4:11And now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.

4:12When you till the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto you its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer you shall be in the earth.”

4:13And Kayin said unto Hashem, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.

4:14Behold, You have driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from Your face I shall be hidden; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one who finds me shall slay me.”

4:15And Hashem said unto him, “Therefore whoever slays Kayin, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And Hashem set a mark upon Kayin, lest any finding him should kill him.

The line of Kayin

4:16And Kayin went out from the presence of Hashem, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

4:17And Kayin knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Ḥanoch (Enoch); and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Ḥanoch.

4:18And unto Ḥanoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Meḥuyael; and Meḥiyael begot Metushael; and Metushael begot Lemech.

4:19And Lemech took unto himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Tzillah.

4:20And Adah bore Yaval; he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.

4:21And his brother’s name was Yuval; he was the father of all such as handle the harp and the flute.

4:22And Tzillah, she also bore Tuval-Kayin, a forger of every cutting tool of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tuval-Kayin was Naamah.

4:23And Lemech said unto his wives, “Adah and Tzillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lemech, listen unto my speech: for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for hurting me.

4:24If Kayin shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lemech seventy and sevenfold.”

Shet and Enosh

4:25And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, and called his name Shet (Seth): “For God,” she said, “has appointed me another seed instead of Hevel, whom Kayin slew.”

4:26And to Shet, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then men began to call upon the name of Hashem.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
