Genesis, Chapter 28

Yitzḥak blesses Yaakov and sends him to Paddan-Aram to take a wife from Lavan’s daughters, and Esav takes Maḥalat the daughter of Yishma’el; on the way to Ḥaran Yaakov dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven, Hashem promises him the land, and he names the place Beit-El and vows a vow.

Yaakov sent to Paddan-Aram

28:1And Yitzḥak (Isaac) called Yaakov, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Kena’an (Canaan).

28:2Arise, go to Paddan-Aram (Padan-aram), to the house of Betu’el (Bethuel) your mother’s father; and take a wife from there of the daughters of Lavan (Laban) your mother’s brother.

28:3And God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, that you may be a multitude of peoples;

28:4and give you the blessing of Avraham (Abraham), to you, and to your seed with you; that you may inherit the land in which you are a stranger, which God gave unto Avraham.”

28:5And Yitzḥak sent away Yaakov; and he went to Paddan-Aram unto Lavan, son of Betu’el the Arami (Syrian), the brother of Rivkah (Rebekah), Yaakov’s and Esav’s mother.

Esav takes Maḥalat

28:6When Esav (Esau) saw that Yitzḥak had blessed Yaakov, and sent him away to Paddan-Aram, to take him a wife from there; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Kena’an”;

28:7and that Yaakov obeyed his father and his mother, and had gone to Paddan-Aram;

28:8and Esav saw that the daughters of Kena’an did not please Yitzḥak his father;

28:9then Esav went unto Yishma’el (Ishmael), and took, besides the wives that he had, Maḥalat (Mahalath) the daughter of Yishma’el, Avraham’s son, the sister of Nevayot (Nebajoth), to be his wife.

Yaakov’s dream of the ladder

28:10And Yaakov (Jacob) went out from Be’er-Sheva (Beer-sheba), and went toward Ḥaran (Haran).

28:11And he came upon a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

28:12And he dreamed, and behold, a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

28:13And, behold, Hashem stood above it, and said, “I am Hashem, the God of Avraham your father, and the God of Yitzḥak. The land on which you lie, to you will I give it, and to your seed;

28:14and your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south; and in you and in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

28:15And, behold, I am with you, and will keep you in all places wherever you go, and will bring you again into this land; for I will not leave you, until I have done that which I have spoken to you of.”

28:16And Yaakov awoke out of his sleep, and he said, “Surely Hashem is in this place; and I did not know it.”

28:17And he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

The pillar and the vow

28:18And Yaakov rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

28:19And he called the name of that place Beit-El (Beth-el); but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.

28:20And Yaakov vowed a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothing to put on,

28:21so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, then shall Hashem be my God;

28:22and this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that You shall give me I will surely give the tenth unto You.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
