Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 23
Sarah dies at a hundred and twenty-seven in Kiryat-Arba, which is Ḥevron; Avraham asks the children of Ḥet for a burial place, buys the field and cave of Machpelah from Efron for four hundred shekels of silver, and buries Sarah there.
23:1And Sarah was a hundred and seven and twenty years old; these were the years of the life of Sarah.
23:2And Sarah died in Kiryat-Arba (Kirjath-arba), which is Ḥevron (Hebron), in the land of Kena’an (Canaan); and Avraham (Abraham) came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
23:3And Avraham stood up from before his dead, and spoke unto the children of Ḥet (Heth), saying,
23:4“I am a stranger and a sojourner with you; give me a possession of a burial place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
23:5And the children of Ḥet answered Avraham, saying unto him,
23:6“Hear us, my lord: you are a mighty prince among us; in the choice of our tombs bury your dead. None of us shall withhold from you his tomb, but that you may bury your dead.”
23:7And Avraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the children of Ḥet.
23:8And he spoke with them, saying, “If it is your will that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Efron (Ephron) the son of Tzoḥar (Zohar),
23:9that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he has, which is at the end of his field; for the full price he shall give it to me among you for a possession of a burial place.”
23:10And Efron dwelt among the children of Ḥet; and Efron the Ḥitti (Hittite) answered Avraham in the hearing of the children of Ḥet, of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying,
23:11“No, my lord, hear me: the field I give you, and the cave that is in it, I give it to you; in the presence of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”
23:12And Avraham bowed himself down before the people of the land.
23:13And he spoke unto Efron in the hearing of the people of the land, saying, “But if you will, I pray you, hear me: I will give you the money for the field; take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”
23:14And Efron answered Avraham, saying unto him,
23:15“My lord, listen unto me: a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between me and you? Bury therefore your dead.”
23:16And Avraham listened unto Efron; and Avraham weighed to Efron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the children of Ḥet, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
23:17And the field of Efron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all its borders round about, were made sure
23:18unto Avraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Ḥet, before all who went in at the gate of his city.
23:19And after this, Avraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre, which is Ḥevron, in the land of Kena’an.
23:20And the field, and the cave that is in it, were made sure unto Avraham for a possession of a burial place by the children of Ḥet.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
