Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 22
God tests Avraham by commanding him to offer Yitzḥak on a mountain in Moriyah; the angel of Hashem stops his hand, a ram is offered instead, and the blessing is sworn; Avraham hears of the children born to Naḥor, among them Betu’el, father of Rivkah.
22:1And it came to pass after these things, that God tested Avraham (Abraham), and said unto him, “Avraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
22:2And He said, “Take now your son, your only son Yitzḥak (Isaac), whom you love, and go to the land of Moriyah (Moriah); and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell you of.”
22:3And Avraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Yitzḥak his son, and split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
22:4On the third day Avraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
22:5And Avraham said unto his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come back to you.”
22:6And Avraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Yitzḥak his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and the knife; and they went both of them together.
22:7And Yitzḥak spoke unto Avraham his father, and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
22:8And Avraham said, “God will provide Himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
22:9And they came to the place of which God had told him; and Avraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Yitzḥak his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
22:10And Avraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
22:11And the angel of Hashem called unto him out of heaven, and said, “Avraham, Avraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
22:12And he said, “Do not lay your hand upon the lad, nor do anything unto him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
22:13And Avraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by its horns; and Avraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.
22:14And Avraham called the name of that place Hashem Yir’eh (Hashem will see), as it is said to this day, “In the mount of Hashem it shall be seen.”
22:15And the angel of Hashem called unto Avraham out of heaven the second time,
22:16and said, “By Myself have I sworn, says Hashem, because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,
22:17that in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
22:18and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
22:19So Avraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Be’er-Sheva (Beer-sheba); and Avraham dwelt at Be’er-Sheva.
22:20And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Avraham, saying, “Behold, Milkah (Milcah), she also has borne children unto your brother Naḥor (Nahor):
22:21Utz (Huz) his firstborn, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram,
22:22and Kesed (Chesed), and Ḥazo (Hazo), and Pildash, and Yidlaf (Jidlaph), and Betu’el (Bethuel).”
22:23And Betu’el begot Rivkah (Rebekah). These eight Milkah bore to Naḥor, Avraham’s brother.
22:24And his concubine, whose name was Re’umah (Reumah), she also bore Tevaḥ (Tebah), and Gaḥam (Gaham), and Taḥash (Thahash), and Ma’achah (Maachah).
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
