Genesis, Chapter 21

Sarah bears Yitzḥak, who is circumcised and weaned; at Sarah’s word Avraham sends away Hagar and her son, and God saves the lad in the wilderness; Avraham and Avimelech make a covenant at Be’er-Sheva, where Avraham calls on Hashem.

The birth of Yitzḥak

21:1And Hashem remembered Sarah as He had said, and Hashem did unto Sarah as He had spoken.

21:2For Sarah conceived, and bore Avraham (Abraham) a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

21:3And Avraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Yitzḥak (Isaac).

21:4And Avraham circumcised his son Yitzḥak when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

21:5And Avraham was a hundred years old when his son Yitzḥak was born unto him.

21:6And Sarah said, “God has made me to laugh; all who hear will laugh with me.”

21:7And she said, “Who would have said unto Avraham that Sarah should nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”

21:8And the child grew, and was weaned; and Avraham made a great feast on the day that Yitzḥak was weaned.

Hagar and Yishma’el sent away

21:9And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Mitzrit (Egyptian), whom she had borne unto Avraham, mocking.

21:10Therefore she said unto Avraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, with Yitzḥak.”

21:11And the thing was very grievous in Avraham’s sight because of his son.

21:12And God said unto Avraham, “Let it not be grievous in your sight because of the lad, and because of your bondwoman; in all that Sarah has said unto you, listen unto her voice; for in Yitzḥak shall your seed be called.

21:13And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is your seed.”

21:14And Avraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a skin of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Be’er-Sheva (Beer-sheba).

21:15And the water in the skin was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.

21:16And she went, and sat down opposite him a good way off, about a bowshot away; for she said, “Let me not see the death of the child.” And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.

21:17And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not; for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.

21:18Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in your hand; for I will make him a great nation.”

21:19And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad drink.

21:20And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.

21:21And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt).

The covenant at Be’er-Sheva

21:22And it came to pass at that time, that Avimelech (Abimelech) and Pichol (Phichol) the chief captain of his army spoke unto Avraham, saying, “God is with you in all that you do.

21:23Now therefore swear unto me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my grandson; but according to the kindness that I have done unto you, you shall do unto me, and to the land in which you have sojourned.”

21:24And Avraham said, “I will swear.”

21:25And Avraham reproved Avimelech because of a well of water, which Avimelech’s servants had violently taken away.

21:26And Avimelech said, “I do not know who has done this thing; neither did you tell me, nor did I hear of it, until today.”

21:27And Avraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Avimelech; and both of them made a covenant.

21:28And Avraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.

21:29And Avimelech said unto Avraham, “What do these seven ewe lambs mean, which you have set by themselves?”

21:30And he said, “These seven ewe lambs you shall take from my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have dug this well.”

21:31Therefore he called that place Be’er-Sheva, because there they both swore an oath.

21:32Thus they made a covenant at Be’er-Sheva; then Avimelech rose up, and Pichol the chief captain of his army, and they returned into the land of the Pelishtim (Philistines).

21:33And Avraham planted a tamarisk tree in Be’er-Sheva, and called there on the name of Hashem, El Olam (the everlasting God).

21:34And Avraham sojourned in the land of the Pelishtim many days.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
