Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 19
Two angels come to Lot in Sedom, the men of the city surround the house and are struck with blindness, and Lot and his family are led out; Hashem destroys Sedom and Amorah, Lot’s wife becomes a pillar of salt, and Lot’s daughters bear Moav and Ben-Ammi.
19:1And the two angels came to Sedom (Sodom) in the evening; and Lot sat in the gate of Sedom. And Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.
19:2And he said, “Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and stay all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early, and go on your way.” And they said, “No, but we will stay in the street all night.”
19:3And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and baked matzot (unleavened bread), and they ate.
19:4But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sedom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter.
19:5And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, “Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.”
19:6And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
19:7and said, “I pray you, my brothers, do not do so wickedly.
19:8Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing, for this is why they came under the shadow of my roof.”
19:9And they said, “Stand back.” And they said, “This one came in to sojourn, and he would be a judge! Now will we deal worse with you than with them.” And they pressed hard upon the man, upon Lot, and came near to break the door.
19:10But the men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.
19:11And they struck the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
19:12And the men said unto Lot, “Have you anyone else here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whatever you have in the city, bring them out of this place;
19:13for we will destroy this place, because the cry of them has grown great before the face of Hashem; and Hashem has sent us to destroy it.”
19:14And Lot went out, and spoke unto his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, “Up, get out of this place; for Hashem will destroy this city.” But he seemed unto his sons-in-law as one who jested.
19:15And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, “Arise, take your wife, and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.”
19:16And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters, Hashem being merciful unto him; and they brought him forth, and set him outside the city.
19:17And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth outside, that he said, “Escape for your life; do not look behind you, nor stay in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest you be consumed.”
19:18And Lot said unto them, “Oh, not so, my Lord.
19:19Behold now, Your servant has found grace in Your sight, and You have magnified Your mercy, which You have shown unto me in saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil overtake me, and I die.
19:20Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one. Oh, let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my soul shall live.”
19:21And he said unto him, “See, I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city of which you have spoken.
19:22Hurry, escape there; for I cannot do anything until you have come there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Tzo’ar (Zoar).
19:23The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Tzo’ar.
19:24Then Hashem rained upon Sedom and upon Amorah (Gomorrah) brimstone and fire from Hashem out of heaven;
19:25and He overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
19:26But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
19:27And Avraham (Abraham) rose up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before Hashem.
19:28And he looked toward Sedom and Amorah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and lo, the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace.
19:29And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Avraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.
19:30And Lot went up out of Tzo’ar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Tzo’ar; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.
19:31And the firstborn said unto the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth.
19:32Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.”
19:33And they made their father drink wine that night; and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down, nor when she arose.
19:34And it came to pass on the next day, that the firstborn said unto the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine this night also; and you go in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.”
19:35And they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down, nor when she arose.
19:36Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.
19:37And the firstborn bore a son, and called his name Moav (Moab); he is the father of Moav unto this day.
19:38And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
