Genesis, Chapter 10

The generations of the sons of Noaḥ: the nations from Yafet, from Ḥam, including Kush, Nimrod, Mitzrayim and Kena’an and the borders of the Kena’ani, and from Shem through Ever, Peleg and Yoktan, by which the nations were divided after the flood.

The sons of Yafet

10:1Now these are the generations of the sons of Noaḥ (Noah): Shem, Ḥam (Ham), and Yafet (Japheth); and unto them were sons born after the flood.

10:2The sons of Yafet: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Yavan (Greece), and Tuval, and Meshech, and Tiras.

10:3And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Rifat, and Togarmah.

10:4And the sons of Yavan: Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim (Chittim), and Dodanim.

10:5By these were the isles of the nations divided in their lands, every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

The sons of Ḥam

10:6And the sons of Ḥam: Kush (Cush), and Mitzrayim (Egypt), and Put, and Kena’an (Canaan).

10:7And the sons of Kush: Seva, and Ḥavilah (Havilah), and Savtah, and Ra’mah, and Savtecha; and the sons of Ra’mah: Sheva, and Dedan.

Nimrod

10:8And Kush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

10:9He was a mighty hunter before Hashem; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod, the mighty hunter before Hashem.”

10:10And the beginning of his kingdom was Bavel (Babel), and Erech, and Akkad, and Kalneh, in the land of Shinar.

10:11Out of that land went forth Ashur (Assyria), and built Nineveh, and Reḥovot-Ir, and Kelaḥ,

10:12and Resen between Nineveh and Kelaḥ; that is the great city.

10:13And Mitzrayim begot Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehavim, and Naftuḥim,

10:14and Patrusim, and Kasluḥim, out of whom came the Pelishtim (Philistines), and Kaftorim (Caphtorims).

10:15And Kena’an begot Tzidon (Sidon) his firstborn, and Ḥet (Heth),

10:16and the Yevusi (Jebusite), and the Emori (Amorite), and the Girgashi (Girgashites),

10:17and the Ḥivi (Hivite), and the Arki, and the Sini,

10:18and the Arvadi, and the Tzemari, and the Ḥamati; and afterward were the families of the Kena’ani (Canaanites) spread abroad.

10:19And the border of the Kena’ani was from Tzidon, as you go toward Gerar, unto Azzah (Gaza); as you go toward Sedom (Sodom), and Amorah (Gomorrah), and Admah, and Tzevoyim, unto Lasha.

10:20These are the sons of Ḥam, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, in their nations.

The sons of Shem

10:21Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Ever (Eber), the brother of Yafet the elder, even to him were children born.

10:22The sons of Shem: Eilam (Elam), and Ashur, and Arpachshad, and Lud, and Aram.

10:23And the sons of Aram: Utz, and Ḥul, and Geter, and Mash.

10:24And Arpachshad begot Shelaḥ; and Shelaḥ begot Ever.

10:25And unto Ever were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Yoktan.

10:26And Yoktan begot Almodad, and Shelef, and Ḥatzarmavet, and Yeraḥ,

10:27and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,

10:28and Oval, and Avima’el, and Sheva,

10:29and Ofir, and Ḥavilah, and Yovav (Jobab); all these were the sons of Yoktan.

10:30And their dwelling was from Mesha, as you go toward Sefar, the mountain of the east.

10:31These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.

10:32These are the families of the sons of Noaḥ, after their generations, in their nations; and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
