Genesis, Chapter 9

God blesses Noaḥ and his sons, forbids eating blood and shedding man’s blood, and sets His bow in the cloud as the sign of His covenant; Noaḥ plants a vineyard, Ḥam sees his nakedness, and Noaḥ curses Kena’an and blesses Shem and Yafet.

God blesses Noaḥ

9:1And God blessed Noaḥ (Noah) and his sons, and said unto them, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth.

9:2And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moves upon the ground, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand they are delivered.

9:3Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; even as the green herb, I have given you all things.

9:4But flesh with its life, which is its blood, you shall not eat.

9:5And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.

9:6Whoever sheds man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God He made man.

9:7And you, be fruitful and multiply; swarm abundantly in the earth, and multiply in it.”

The sign of the covenant

9:8And God spoke unto Noaḥ, and to his sons with him, saying,

9:9“And I, behold, I establish My covenant with you, and with your seed after you,

9:10and with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.

9:11And I will establish My covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.”

9:12And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for everlasting generations:

9:13I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.

9:14And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud;

9:15and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

9:16And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.”

9:17And God said unto Noaḥ, “This is the sign of the covenant, which I have established between Me and all flesh that is upon the earth.”

Noaḥ’s vineyard

9:18And the sons of Noaḥ that went forth from the ark were Shem, and Ḥam (Ham), and Yafet (Japheth); and Ḥam is the father of Kena’an (Canaan).

9:19These three were the sons of Noaḥ; and of them was the whole earth overspread.

9:20And Noaḥ began to be a farmer, and he planted a vineyard.

9:21And he drank of the wine, and was drunk; and he was uncovered within his tent.

9:22And Ḥam, the father of Kena’an, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.

9:23And Shem and Yafet took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.

9:24And Noaḥ awoke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son had done unto him.

9:25And he said, “Cursed be Kena’an; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brothers.”

9:26And he said, “Blessed be Hashem, the God of Shem; and let Kena’an be his servant.

9:27God shall enlarge Yafet, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Kena’an be his servant.”

The death of Noaḥ

9:28And Noaḥ lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.

9:29And all the days of Noaḥ were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
