Genesis, Chapter 11

The whole earth speaks one language and builds a city and tower in Shinar, until Hashem confounds their speech and scatters them from Bavel; the line of Shem runs to Teraḥ, who takes Avram, Sarai and Lot from Ur Kasdim to Ḥaran.

The tower of Bavel

11:1And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

11:2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

11:3And they said one to another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and slime they had for mortar.

11:4And they said, “Come, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

11:5And Hashem came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men had built.

11:6And Hashem said, “Behold, the people is one, and they all have one language; and this they begin to do; and now nothing will be withheld from them which they have schemed to do.

11:7Come, let Us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

11:8So Hashem scattered them abroad from there upon the face of all the earth; and they stopped building the city.

11:9Therefore its name is called Bavel (Babel), because Hashem there confounded the language of all the earth; and from there Hashem scattered them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

The generations of Shem

11:10These are the generations of Shem: Shem was a hundred years old, and begot Arpachshad two years after the flood.

11:11And Shem lived after he begot Arpachshad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:12And Arpachshad lived five and thirty years, and begot Shelaḥ.

11:13And Arpachshad lived after he begot Shelaḥ four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:14And Shelaḥ lived thirty years, and begot Ever (Eber).

11:15And Shelaḥ lived after he begot Ever four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:16And Ever lived four and thirty years, and begot Peleg.

11:17And Ever lived after he begot Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:18And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Re’u.

11:19And Peleg lived after he begot Re’u two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:20And Re’u lived two and thirty years, and begot Serug.

11:21And Re’u lived after he begot Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:22And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Naḥor (Nahor).

11:23And Serug lived after he begot Naḥor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:24And Naḥor lived nine and twenty years, and begot Teraḥ (Tarah).

11:25And Naḥor lived after he begot Teraḥ a hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

11:26And Teraḥ lived seventy years, and begot Avram (Abram), Naḥor, and Haran.

The generations of Teraḥ

11:27Now these are the generations of Teraḥ: Teraḥ begot Avram, Naḥor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot.

11:28And Haran died before his father Teraḥ in the land of his birth, in Ur Kasdim (Ur of the Chaldees).

11:29And Avram and Naḥor took them wives: the name of Avram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Naḥor’s wife, Milkah (Milcah), the daughter of Haran, the father of Milkah, and the father of Yiskah.

11:30But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

11:31And Teraḥ took Avram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Avram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur Kasdim, to go into the land of Kena’an (Canaan); and they came unto Ḥaran (Haran), and dwelt there.

11:32And the days of Teraḥ were two hundred and five years; and Teraḥ died in Ḥaran.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
