Text (469) 608-9944Ezra, Chapter 4
Zerubavel and Yeshua refuse the help of the adversaries of Yehudah and Binyamin, who then hinder the work through the days of Koresh; in the days of Artachshasta, Rechum and Shimshai write against Yerushalayim, the king orders the building stopped, and the work ceases until the second year of Daryavesh.
4:1Now when the adversaries of Yehudah (Judah) and Binyamin (Benjamin) heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto Hashem God of Israel;
4:2Then they came to Zerubavel (Zerubbabel), and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, “Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as you do; and we do sacrifice unto Him since the days of Esar-Chaddon (Esar-haddon) king of Ashur (Assur), which brought us up hither.”
4:3But Zerubavel, and Yeshua (Jeshua), and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, “You have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto Hashem God of Israel, as king Koresh (Cyrus) the king of Paras (Persia) has commanded us.”
4:4Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Yehudah, and troubled them in building,
4:5And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Koresh king of Paras, even until the reign of Daryavesh (Darius) king of Paras.
4:6And in the reign of Achashverosh (Ahasuerus), in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Yehudah and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).
4:7And in the days of Artachshasta (Artaxerxes) wrote Bishlam, Mitredat (Mithredath), Tave’el (Tabeel), and the rest of their companions, unto Artachshasta king of Paras; and the writing of the letter was written in Aramit (the Syrian tongue), and interpreted in Aramit.
4:8Rechum (Rehum) the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Yerushalayim to Artachshasta the king in this sort:
4:9Then wrote Rechum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaye (Dinaites), the Afarsatchaye (Apharsathchites), the Tarpelaye (Tarpelites), the Afarsaye (Apharsites), the Arkevaye (Archevites), the Bavlaye (Babylonians), the Shushanchaye (Susanchites), the Dehaye (Dehavites), and the Elmaye (Elamites),
4:10And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnapar (Asnapper) brought over, and set in the cities of Shamrayin (Samaria), and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
4:11This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artachshasta the king; “Your servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
4:12Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from you to us are come unto Yerushalayim, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
4:13Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so you shall endamage the revenue of the kings.
4:14Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
4:15That search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers: so shall you find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
4:16We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means you shall have no portion on this side the river.”
4:17Then sent the king an answer unto Rechum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Shamrayin, and unto the rest beyond the river, “Peace, and at such a time.
4:18The letter which you sent unto us has been plainly read before me.
4:19And I commanded, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
4:20There have been mighty kings also over Yerushalayim, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
4:21Give you now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
4:22Take heed now that you fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?”
4:23Now when the copy of king Artachshasta’s letter was read before Rechum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Yerushalayim unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
4:24Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Yerushalayim. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Daryavesh king of Paras.

Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
