Text (469) 608-9944Ezra, Chapter 3
In the seventh month the people gather to Yerushalayim; Yeshua and Zerubavel build the altar, offer burnt offerings and keep the feast of tabernacles; in the second year the foundation of the temple of Hashem is laid with trumpets and cymbals, and the people shout for joy while the old men weep.
3:1And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).
3:2Then stood up Yeshua (Jeshua) the son of Yotzadak (Jozadak), and his brethren the priests, and Zerubavel (Zerubbabel) the son of She’alti’el (Shealtiel), and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it is written in the Torah of Moshe (Moses) the man of God.
3:3And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings thereon unto Hashem, even burnt offerings morning and evening.
3:4They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;
3:5And afterward offered the continual burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of Hashem that were consecrated, and of every one that willingly offered a freewill offering unto Hashem.
3:6From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto Hashem. But the foundation of the temple of Hashem was not yet laid.
3:7They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and food, and drink, and oil, unto them of Tzidon (Zidon), and to them of Tzor (Tyre), to bring cedar trees from Levanon (Lebanon) to the sea of Yafo (Joppa), according to the grant that they had of Koresh (Cyrus) king of Paras (Persia).
3:8Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Yerushalayim, in the second month, began Zerubavel the son of She’alti’el, and Yeshua the son of Yotzadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levi’im (Levites), and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Yerushalayim; and appointed the Levi’im, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of Hashem.
3:9Then stood Yeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmi’el (Kadmiel) and his sons, the sons of Yehudah (Judah), together, to set forward the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Chenadad (Henadad), with their sons and their brethren the Levi’im.
3:10And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of Hashem, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levi’im the sons of Asaf (Asaph) with cymbals, to praise Hashem, after the ordinance of David king of Israel.
3:11And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto Hashem; because He is good, for His mercy endures for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised Hashem, because the foundation of the house of Hashem was laid.
3:12But many of the priests and Levi’im and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy:
3:13So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Ezra they are the same as in most English Bibles.
