Text (469) 608-9944Ezra, Chapter 5
Chaggai and Zecharyah prophesy, and Zerubavel and Yeshua begin again to build the house of God; Tattenai the governor and Shetar-Bozenai ask who commanded it, and write to Daryavesh telling the elders’ answer and asking that the decree of Koresh be searched for in Bavel.
5:1Then the prophets, Chaggai (Haggai) the prophet, and Zecharyah (Zechariah) the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Yehud (Judah) and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them.
5:2Then rose up Zerubavel (Zerubbabel) the son of She’alti’el (Shealtiel), and Yeshua (Jeshua) the son of Yotzadak (Jozadak), and began to build the house of God which is at Yerushalayim: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.
5:3At the same time came to them Tattenai (Tatnai), governor on this side the river, and Shetar-Bozenai (Shethar-boznai), and their companions, and said thus unto them, “Who has commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?”
5:4Then said we unto them after this manner, “What are the names of the men that make this building?”
5:5But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Daryavesh (Darius): and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter.
5:6The copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor on this side the river, and Shetar-Bozenai, and his companions the Afarsechaye (Apharsachites), which were on this side the river, sent unto Daryavesh the king:
5:7They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; “Unto Daryavesh the king, all peace.
5:8Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Yehud, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goes fast on, and prospers in their hands.
5:9Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, ‘Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls?’
5:10We asked their names also, to certify you, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.
5:11And thus they returned us answer, saying, ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.
5:12But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, He gave them into the hand of Nevuchadnetzar (Nebuchadnezzar) the king of Bavel (Babylon), the Kasda’ah (Chaldean), who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Bavel.
5:13But in the first year of Koresh (Cyrus) the king of Bavel the same king Koresh made a decree to build this house of God.
5:14And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nevuchadnetzar took out of the temple that was in Yerushalayim, and brought them into the temple of Bavel, those did Koresh the king take out of the temple of Bavel, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbatzar (Sheshbazzar), whom he had made governor;
5:15And said unto him, “Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Yerushalayim, and let the house of God be builded in his place.”
5:16Then came the same Sheshbatzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Yerushalayim: and since that time even until now has it been in building, and yet it is not finished.’
5:17Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Bavel, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Koresh the king to build this house of God at Yerushalayim, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Ezra they are the same as in most English Bibles.
