Exodus, Chapter 7

Hashem makes Moshe as a god to Par’oh with Aharon as his prophet; Aharon’s rod becomes a serpent and swallows the magicians’ rods, Par’oh’s heart is hardened, the waters of Mitzrayim are turned to blood for seven days, and Moshe is sent to warn of frogs.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 26–29 here are 8:1–4 in most English Bibles.

A God to Par’oh

7:1And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “See, I have made you a god to Par’oh (Pharaoh); and Aharon (Aaron) your brother shall be your prophet.

7:2You shall speak all that I command you; and Aharon your brother shall speak unto Par’oh, that he send the children of Yisrael (Israel) out of his land.

7:3And I will harden Par’oh’s heart, and multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt).

7:4But Par’oh shall not hearken unto you, that I may lay My hand upon Mitzrayim, and bring forth My armies, and My people the children of Yisrael, out of the land of Mitzrayim by great judgments.

7:5And the Egyptians shall know that I am Hashem, when I stretch forth My hand upon Mitzrayim, and bring out the children of Yisrael from among them.”

7:6And Moshe and Aharon did as Hashem commanded them; so they did.

7:7And Moshe was eighty years old, and Aharon eighty and three years old, when they spoke unto Par’oh.

Aharon’s rod becomes a serpent

7:8And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon, saying,

7:9“When Par’oh shall speak unto you, saying, Show a miracle for yourselves; then you shall say unto Aharon, Take your rod, and cast it before Par’oh, and it shall become a serpent.”

7:10And Moshe and Aharon went in unto Par’oh, and they did so, as Hashem had commanded; and Aharon cast down his rod before Par’oh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.

7:11Then Par’oh also called the wise men and the sorcerers; and the magicians of Mitzrayim, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.

7:12For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents; but Aharon’s rod swallowed up their rods.

7:13And he hardened Par’oh’s heart, that he did not hearken unto them; as Hashem had said.

The plague of blood

7:14And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Par’oh’s heart is hardened; he refuses to let the people go.

7:15Go unto Par’oh in the morning; behold, he goes out unto the water; and you shall stand by the river’s brink to meet him; and the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand.

7:16And you shall say unto him, Hashem, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me unto you, saying, Let My people go, that they may serve Me in the wilderness; and behold, until now you would not hear.

7:17Thus says Hashem: In this you shall know that I am Hashem: behold, I will strike with the rod that is in my hand upon the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.

7:18And the fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall stink; and the Egyptians shall loathe to drink of the water of the river.”

7:19And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Say unto Aharon, Take your rod, and stretch out your hand upon the waters of Mitzrayim, upon their streams, upon their rivers, and upon their ponds, and upon all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Mitzrayim, both in vessels of wood, and in vessels of stone.”

7:20And Moshe and Aharon did so, as Hashem commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Par’oh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood.

7:21And the fish that were in the river died; and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river; and there was blood throughout all the land of Mitzrayim.

7:22And the magicians of Mitzrayim did so with their enchantments; and Par’oh’s heart was hardened, and he did not hearken unto them; as Hashem had said.

7:23And Par’oh turned and went into his house, neither did he set his heart to this also.

7:24And all the Egyptians dug round about the river for water to drink; for they could not drink of the water of the river.

7:25And seven days were fulfilled, after Hashem had struck the river.

The warning of frogs

7:26And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Go unto Par’oh, and say unto him, Thus says Hashem: Let My people go, that they may serve Me.

7:27And if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will strike all your borders with frogs;

7:28and the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into your house, and into your bedchamber, and upon your bed, and into the house of your servants, and upon your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs;

7:29and the frogs shall come up both on you, and upon your people, and upon all your servants.”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
