Exodus, Chapter 6

Hashem promises Moshe to bring Yisrael out of bondage and into the land sworn to Avraham, Yitzḥak and Yaakov, but the people do not hearken; the heads of the houses of Reuven, Shimon and Levi are listed down to Aharon and Pinḥas, and Moshe again pleads his uncircumcised lips.

I am Hashem

6:1Then Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Now you shall see what I will do to Par’oh (Pharaoh); for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.”

6:2And God spoke unto Moshe, and said unto him, “I am Hashem;

6:3and I appeared unto Avraham (Abraham), unto Yitzḥak (Isaac), and unto Yaakov (Jacob), by the name of God Almighty (El Shaddai), but by My name Hashem I was not known to them.

6:4And I have also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Kena’an (Canaan), the land of their pilgrimage, in which they were strangers.

6:5And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Yisrael (Israel), whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered My covenant.

6:6Therefore say unto the children of Yisrael, I am Hashem, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments;

6:7and I will take you to Me for a people, and I will be to you a God; and you shall know that I am Hashem your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

6:8And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning which I did swear to give it to Avraham, to Yitzḥak, and to Yaakov; and I will give it you for a heritage: I am Hashem.”

6:9And Moshe spoke so unto the children of Yisrael; but they did not hearken unto Moshe for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

Moshe is sent again

6:10And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

6:11“Go in, speak unto Par’oh king of Mitzrayim (Egypt), that he let the children of Yisrael go out of his land.”

6:12And Moshe spoke before Hashem, saying, “Behold, the children of Yisrael have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Par’oh hear me, who am of uncircumcised lips?”

6:13And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and unto Aharon (Aaron), and gave them a charge unto the children of Yisrael, and unto Par’oh king of Mitzrayim, to bring the children of Yisrael out of the land of Mitzrayim.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
