Text (469) 608-9944Exodus, Chapter 17
At Refidim the people quarrel with Moshe for lack of water, and he strikes the rock in Ḥorev, naming the place Massah and Merivah; Amalek attacks, Yehoshua defeats them while Aharon and Ḥur hold up Moshe’s hands, and Moshe builds the altar Hashem Nissi.
17:1And all the congregation of the children of Yisrael (Israel) journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their journeys, according to the commandment of Hashem, and pitched in Refidim (Rephidim); and there was no water for the people to drink.
17:2Therefore the people quarreled with Moshe (Moses), and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moshe said unto them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Hashem?”
17:3And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moshe, and said, “Why is this that you have brought us up out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?”
17:4And Moshe cried unto Hashem, saying, “What shall I do unto this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
17:5And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Go on before the people, and take with you of the elders of Yisrael; and your rod, with which you struck the river, take in your hand, and go.
17:6Behold, I will stand before you there upon the rock in Ḥorev (Horeb); and you shall strike the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moshe did so in the sight of the elders of Yisrael.
17:7And he called the name of the place Massah and Merivah (Meribah), because of the quarreling of the children of Yisrael, and because they tested Hashem, saying, “Is Hashem among us, or not?”
17:8Then came Amalek, and fought with Yisrael in Refidim.
17:9And Moshe said unto Yehoshua (Joshua), “Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek; tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”
17:10So Yehoshua did as Moshe had said to him, and fought with Amalek; and Moshe, Aharon (Aaron), and Ḥur (Hur) went up to the top of the hill.
17:11And it came to pass, when Moshe held up his hand, that Yisrael prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
17:12But Moshe’s hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aharon and Ḥur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
17:13And Yehoshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
17:14And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Yehoshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”
17:15And Moshe built an altar, and called the name of it Hashem Nissi (Hashem is my banner).
17:16And he said, “Because Hashem has sworn that Hashem will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
