Exodus, Chapter 16

In the wilderness of Sin the congregation murmurs for bread; Hashem sends quails at evening and manna in the morning, gathered by the omer, with a double portion on the sixth day and none on the Shabbat, and an omer of manna is laid up before the Testimony.

Murmuring in the wilderness of sin

16:1And they took their journey from Eilim (Elim), and all the congregation of the children of Yisrael (Israel) came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Eilim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt).

16:2And the whole congregation of the children of Yisrael murmured against Moshe (Moses) and Aharon (Aaron) in the wilderness;

Written and read. Written וילינו, read וַיִּלּ֜וֹנוּ. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

16:3and the children of Yisrael said unto them, “Would that we had died by the hand of Hashem in the land of Mitzrayim, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we ate bread to the full; for you have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

16:4Then Hashem said unto Moshe, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law, or not.

16:5And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”

16:6And Moshe and Aharon said unto all the children of Yisrael, “At evening, then you shall know that Hashem has brought you out from the land of Mitzrayim;

16:7and in the morning, then you shall see the glory of Hashem; for He hears your murmurings against Hashem; and what are we, that you murmur against us?”

Written and read. Written תלונו, read תַלִּ֖ינוּ. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

16:8And Moshe said, “This shall be, when Hashem shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for Hashem hears your murmurings which you murmur against Him; and what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Hashem.”

16:9And Moshe spoke unto Aharon, “Say unto all the congregation of the children of Yisrael, Come near before Hashem; for He has heard your murmurings.”

16:10And it came to pass, as Aharon spoke unto the whole congregation of the children of Yisrael, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of Hashem appeared in the cloud.

16:11And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,

16:12“I have heard the murmurings of the children of Yisrael; speak unto them, saying, At evening you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am Hashem your God.”

Quails and manna

16:13And it came to pass, that at evening the quails came up, and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.

16:14And when the dew that lay had gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoarfrost on the ground.

16:15And when the children of Yisrael saw it, they said one to another, “It is manna,” for they did not know what it was. And Moshe said unto them, “This is the bread which Hashem has given you to eat.

16:16This is the thing which Hashem has commanded: Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take every man for them which are in his tents.”

16:17And the children of Yisrael did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

16:18And when they measured it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

16:19And Moshe said, “Let no man leave of it until the morning.”

16:20Nevertheless they did not hearken unto Moshe; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank; and Moshe was angry with them.

16:21And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating; and when the sun grew hot, it melted.

Manna and the Shabbat

16:22And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man; and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moshe.

16:23And he said unto them, “This is that which Hashem has said: Tomorrow is the rest of the holy Shabbat unto Hashem; bake that which you will bake, and boil that which you will boil; and that which remains over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.”

16:24And they laid it up until the morning, as Moshe commanded; and it did not stink, neither was there any worm in it.

16:25And Moshe said, “Eat that today; for today is a Shabbat unto Hashem; today you shall not find it in the field.

16:26Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the Shabbat, in it there shall be none.”

16:27And it came to pass, that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, and they found none.

16:28And Hashem said unto Moshe, “How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws?

16:29See, because Hashem has given you the Shabbat, therefore He gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.”

16:30So the people rested on the seventh day.

The omer laid up

16:31And the house of Yisrael called the name of it Manna; and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.

16:32And Moshe said, “This is the thing which Hashem commands: Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread with which I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Mitzrayim.”

16:33And Moshe said unto Aharon, “Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna in it, and lay it up before Hashem, to be kept for your generations.”

16:34As Hashem commanded Moshe, so Aharon laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.

16:35And the children of Yisrael ate manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they ate manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Kena’an (Canaan).

16:36Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
