Text (469) 608-9944Exodus, Chapter 11
Hashem tells Moshe of one plague more and has the people ask the Egyptians for jewels of silver and gold; Moshe warns that at midnight every firstborn in Mitzrayim will die while Yisrael is spared, and goes out from Par’oh in great anger.
11:1And Hashem said unto Moshe (Moses), “Yet will I bring one plague more upon Par’oh (Pharaoh), and upon Mitzrayim (Egypt); afterwards he will let you go from here; when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out from here altogether.
11:2Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbor, and every woman of her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.”
11:3And Hashem gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moshe was very great in the land of Mitzrayim, in the sight of Par’oh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.
11:4And Moshe said, “Thus says Hashem: About midnight I will go out into the midst of Mitzrayim;
11:5and all the firstborn in the land of Mitzrayim shall die, from the firstborn of Par’oh that sits upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.
11:6And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Mitzrayim, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
11:7But against any of the children of Yisrael (Israel) shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast; that you may know that Hashem puts a difference between the Egyptians and Yisrael.
11:8And all these your servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get out, and all the people that follow you; and after that I will go out.” And he went out from Par’oh in a great anger.
11:9And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Par’oh shall not hearken unto you; that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Mitzrayim.”
11:10And Moshe and Aharon (Aaron) did all these wonders before Par’oh; and Hashem hardened Par’oh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Yisrael go out of his land.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
