Text (469) 608-9944Ecclesiastes, Chapter 6
An evil under the sun: a man to whom God gives riches, wealth and honour but not power to eat thereof, so that an untimely birth is better than he; all man’s labour is for his mouth, and none can tell what is good for man or what shall be after him.
6:1There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
6:2A man to whom God has given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wants nothing for his soul of all that he desires, yet God gives him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eats it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
6:3If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
6:4For he comes in with vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
6:5Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this has more rest than the other.
6:6Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet has he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
6:7All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
6:8For what has the wise more than the fool? what has the poor, that knows to walk before the living?
6:9Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
6:10That which has been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
6:11Seeing there are many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
6:12For who knows what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spends as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Ecclesiastes they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 4 and 5; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
- Hebrew font
