Ecclesiastes, Chapter 5

Counsel to keep the mouth and to pay vows before God, and not to marvel at the oppression of the poor; the love of silver does not satisfy, riches are kept to their owner’s hurt, and to eat, drink and enjoy the good of one’s labour is the gift of God.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. Verses 1–19 here are 5:2–20 in most English Bibles. Verse 5:1 of most English Bibles is 4:17 here.

5:1Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few.

5:2For a dream comes through the multitude of business; and a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words.

Vows to God

5:3When you vow a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for He has no pleasure in fools: pay that which you have vowed.

5:4Better is it that you should not vow, than that you should vow and not pay.

5:5Suffer not your mouth to cause your flesh to sin; neither say you before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?

5:6For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear you God.

The oppression of the poor

5:7If you see the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regards; and there are higher than they.

5:8Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.

The love of silver

5:9He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loves abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

5:10When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?

5:11The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

5:12There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.

5:13But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begets a son, and there is nothing in his hand.

5:14As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.

5:15And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit has he that has laboured for the wind?

5:16All his days also he eats in darkness, and he has much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.

The gift of God

5:17Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he takes under the sun all the days of his life, which God gives him: for it is his portion.

5:18Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

5:19For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answers him in the joy of his heart.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Ecclesiastes they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 4 and 5; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
