Deuteronomy, Chapter 7

Moshe commands Yisrael to make no covenant or marriage with the seven nations of the land and to destroy their altars, tells them they are a holy people chosen out of Hashem’s love, promises blessing for obedience, and assures them that Hashem will drive the nations out little by little.

No covenant with the seven nations

7:1“When Hashem your God shall bring you into the land into which you go to possess it, and has cast out many nations before you, the Ḥitti (Hittites), and the Girgashi (Girgashites), and the Emori, and the Kena’ani (Canaanites), and the Perizzi (Perizzites), and the Ḥivi (Hivites), and the Yevusi (Jebusites), seven nations greater and mightier than you;

7:2and when Hashem your God shall deliver them before you, you shall strike them, and utterly destroy them; you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them;

7:3neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give unto his son, nor his daughter shall you take unto your son.

7:4For he will turn away your son from following Me, that they may serve other gods; so will the anger of Hashem be kindled against you, and He will destroy you suddenly.

7:5But thus shall you deal with them: you shall destroy their altars, and break down their pillars, and cut down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.

A holy people chosen by Hashem

7:6For you are a holy people unto Hashem your God; Hashem your God has chosen you to be a special people unto Himself, above all peoples that are upon the face of the earth.

7:7Hashem did not set His love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples;

7:8but because Hashem loved you, and because He would keep the oath which He had sworn unto your fathers, Hashem has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Par’oh (Pharaoh) king of Mitzrayim (Egypt).

7:9Know therefore that Hashem your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations;

Written and read. Written מצותו, read מִצְוֺתָ֖יו. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

7:10and repays them that hate Him to their face, to destroy them; He will not be slack to him that hates Him, He will repay him to his face.

7:11You shall therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command you this day, to do them.”

Blessings for hearkening

7:12“And it shall come to pass, because you hearken to these judgments, and keep and do them, that Hashem your God shall keep unto you the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto your fathers;

7:13and He will love you, and bless you, and multiply you; He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the flocks of your sheep, in the land which He swore unto your fathers to give you.

7:14You shall be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

7:15And Hashem will take away from you all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Mitzrayim, which you know, upon you, but will lay them upon all those that hate you.

7:16And you shall consume all the peoples which Hashem your God shall deliver unto you; your eye shall have no pity upon them; neither shall you serve their gods, for that will be a snare unto you.

Do not fear the nations

7:17If you shall say in your heart, ‘These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?’

7:18you shall not be afraid of them, but shall well remember what Hashem your God did unto Pharaoh and unto all Mitzrayim:

7:19the great trials which your eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which Hashem your God brought you out. So shall Hashem your God do unto all the peoples of whom you are afraid.

7:20Moreover Hashem your God will send the hornet among them, until those that are left, and hide themselves from you, are destroyed.

7:21You shall not be terrified of them, for Hashem your God is in your midst, a mighty God and awesome.

7:22And Hashem your God will drive out those nations before you little by little; you may not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon you.

7:23But Hashem your God shall deliver them before you, and shall destroy them with a mighty destruction, until they are destroyed.

7:24And He shall deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall destroy their name from under heaven; no man shall be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them.

Burn their graven images

7:25The graven images of their gods you shall burn with fire; you shall not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto yourself, lest you be snared by it; for it is an abomination to Hashem your God.

7:26Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be a cursed thing like it; you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is a cursed thing.”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
