Text (469) 608-9944Amos, Chapter 3
Hashem has known Israel alone of all the families of the earth and will punish its iniquities; the lion has roared and the prophet must prophesy; Ashdod and Mitzrayim are called to see the oppression in Shomron, and the altars of Beit El and the houses of ivory shall perish.
3:1Hear this word that Hashem has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), saying,
3:2“You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.”
3:3Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
3:4Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing?
3:5Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
3:6Shall a shofar (trumpet) be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and Hashem has not done it?
3:7Surely the Lord Hashem will do nothing, but He reveals His secret unto His servants the prophets.
3:8The lion has roared, who will not fear? the Lord Hashem has spoken, who can but prophesy?
3:9Publish in the palaces at Ashdod, and in the palaces in the land of Mitzrayim, and say, “Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Shomron (Samaria), and behold the great tumults in the midst thereof, and the oppressed in the midst thereof.”
3:10For they know not to do right, says Hashem, who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.
3:11Therefore thus says the Lord Hashem; “An adversary there shall be even round about the land; and he shall bring down your strength from you, and your palaces shall be spoiled.”
3:12Thus says Hashem; “As the shepherd takes out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Shomron in the corner of a bed, and in Demeshek (Damascus) in a couch.”
3:13Hear you, and testify in the house of Ya’akov (Jacob), says the Lord Hashem, the God of hosts,
3:14That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of Beit El (Bethel): and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground.
3:15And I will strike the winter house with the summer house; and the houses of ivory shall perish, and the great houses shall have an end, says Hashem.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Amos they are the same as in most English Bibles.
