Text (469) 608-9944Amos, Chapter 4
The cows of Bashan who oppress the poor shall be taken away with hooks; Israel multiplies transgression at Beit El and Gilgal, and though Hashem sent famine, drought, blight, pestilence and overthrow, they have not returned to Him; therefore Israel must prepare to meet its God.
4:1Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Shomron (Samaria), which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters, “Bring, and let us drink.”
4:2The Lord Hashem has sworn by His holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity with fishhooks.
4:3And you shall go out at the breaches, every cow at that which is before her; and you shall cast them into the palace, says Hashem.
4:4Come to Beit El (Bethel), and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:
4:5And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this likes you, O you children of Israel, says the Lord Hashem.
4:6And I also have given you cleanness of teeth in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have you not returned unto Me, says Hashem.
4:7And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.
4:8So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have you not returned unto Me, says Hashem.
4:9I have struck you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have you not returned unto Me, says Hashem.
4:10I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Mitzrayim (Egypt): your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have you not returned unto Me, says Hashem.
4:11I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sedom (Sodom) and Amorah (Gomorrah), and you were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have you not returned unto Me, says Hashem.
4:12Therefore thus will I do unto you, O Israel: and because I will do this unto you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel.
4:13For, lo, He that forms the mountains, and creates the wind, and declares unto man what is his thought, that makes the morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the earth, Hashem, The God of hosts, is His name.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Amos they are the same as in most English Bibles.
