Text (469) 608-9944Amos, Chapter 2
For three transgressions and for four Hashem sends fire upon Mo’av and upon Yehudah, which despised the Torah of Hashem; and Israel, which sold the righteous for silver, forgot the God who destroyed the Emori and raised up prophets and Nazarites, and its mighty men shall not escape.
2:1Thus says Hashem; “For three transgressions of Mo’av (Moab), and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:
2:2But I will send a fire upon Mo’av, and it shall devour the palaces of Keriyot (Kirioth): and Mo’av shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the shofar (trumpet):
2:3And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him,” says Hashem.
2:4Thus says Hashem; “For three transgressions of Yehudah (Judah), and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the Torah of Hashem, and have not kept His commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
2:5But I will send a fire upon Yehudah, and it shall devour the palaces of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).”
2:6Thus says Hashem; “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
2:7That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane My holy name:
2:8And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
2:9Yet destroyed I the Emori (Amorite) before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
2:10Also I brought you up from the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Emori.
2:11And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O you children of Israel? says Hashem.
2:12But you gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, ‘Prophesy not.’
2:13Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.
2:14Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
2:15Neither shall he stand that handles the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rides the horse deliver himself.
2:16And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day,” says Hashem.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible; in Amos they are the same as in most English Bibles.
