Text (469) 608-99442 Kings, Chapter 17
Hoshe’a reigns over Israel and rebels against Shalmaneser; the king of Ashur takes Shomron and carries Israel away to Ashur, because they sinned against Hashem and served other gods; the nations he settles in Shomron are attacked by lions, are taught to fear Hashem, and go on serving their own gods.
17:1In the twelfth year of Achaz (Ahaz) king of Yehudah (Judah) began Hoshe’a (Hoshea) the son of Elah to reign in Shomron (Samaria) over Israel nine years.
17:2And he did that which was evil in the sight of Hashem, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him.
17:3Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Ashur (Assyria); and Hoshe’a became his servant, and gave him presents.
17:4And the king of Ashur found conspiracy in Hoshe’a: for he had sent messengers to So king of Mitzrayim (Egypt), and brought no present to the king of Ashur, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Ashur shut him up, and bound him in prison.
17:5Then the king of Ashur came up throughout all the land, and went up to Shomron, and besieged it three years.
17:6In the ninth year of Hoshe’a the king of Ashur took Shomron, and carried Israel away into Ashur, and placed them in Chalach (Halah) and in Chavor (Habor) by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of Madai (the Medes).
17:7For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against Hashem their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Mitzrayim, from under the hand of Par’oh (Pharaoh) king of Mitzrayim, and had feared other gods,
17:8And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom Hashem cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.
17:9And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against Hashem their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
17:10And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:
17:11And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom Hashem carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke Hashem to anger:
17:12For they served idols, whereof Hashem had said unto them, “You shall not do this thing.”
17:13Yet Hashem testified against Israel, and against Yehudah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, “Turn from your evil ways, and keep My commandments and My statutes, according to all the Torah which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by My servants the prophets.”
17:14Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in Hashem their God.
17:15And they rejected His statutes, and His covenant that He made with their fathers, and His testimonies which He testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom Hashem had charged them, that they should not do like them.
17:16And they left all the commandments of Hashem their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Ba’al (Baal).
17:17And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of Hashem, to provoke Him to anger.
17:18Therefore Hashem was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of His sight: there was none left but the tribe of Yehudah only.
17:19Also Yehudah kept not the commandments of Hashem their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
17:20And Hashem rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until He had cast them out of His sight.
17:21For He rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Yarov’am (Jeroboam) the son of Nevat (Nebat) king: and Yarov’am drove Israel from following Hashem, and made them sin a great sin.
17:22For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Yarov’am which he did; they departed not from them;
17:23Until Hashem removed Israel out of His sight, as He had said by all His servants the prophets. So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Ashur unto this day.
17:24And the king of Ashur brought men from Bavel (Babylon), and from Kutah (Cuthah), and from Avva (Ava), and from Chamat (Hamath), and from Sefarvayim (Sepharvaim), and placed them in the cities of Shomron instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Shomron, and dwelt in the cities thereof.
17:25And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not Hashem: therefore Hashem sent lions among them, which slew some of them.
17:26Wherefore they spoke to the king of Ashur, saying, “The nations which you have removed, and placed in the cities of Shomron, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore He has sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.”
17:27Then the king of Ashur commanded, saying, “Carry thither one of the priests whom you brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.”
17:28Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Shomron came and dwelt in Beit El (Bethel), and taught them how they should fear Hashem.
17:29Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Shomronim (Samaritans) had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.
17:30And the men of Bavel made Sukkot Benot (Succoth-benoth), and the men of Kut (Cuth) made Nergal, and the men of Chamat made Ashima,
17:31And the Avvim (Avites) made Nivchaz (Nibhaz) and Tartak, and the Sefarvim (Sepharvites) burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sefarvayim.
17:32So they feared Hashem, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.
17:33They feared Hashem, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.
17:34Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not Hashem, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the Torah and commandment which Hashem commanded the children of Ya’akov (Jacob), whom He named Israel;
17:35With whom Hashem had made a covenant, and charged them saying, “You shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:
17:36But Hashem, who brought you up out of the land of Mitzrayim with great power and a stretched out arm, Him shall you fear, and Him shall you worship, and to Him shall you do sacrifice.
17:37And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the Torah, and the commandment, which He wrote for you, you shall observe to do for evermore; and you shall not fear other gods.
17:38And the covenant that I have made with you, you shall not forget; neither shall you fear other gods.
17:39But Hashem your God you shall fear; and He shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.”
17:40Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner.
17:41So these nations feared Hashem, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.
