2 Kings, Chapter 16

Achaz reigns in Yerushalayim and walks in the way of the kings of Israel; when Retzin and Pekach come up against him he sends the silver and gold of the house of Hashem to Tiglat Pil’eser, has Uriyah the priest build an altar after the pattern of the one at Damesek, and changes the furnishings of the house of Hashem.

16:1In the seventeenth year of Pekach (Pekah) the son of Remalyahu (Remaliah) Achaz (Ahaz) the son of Yotam (Jotham) king of Yehudah (Judah) began to reign.

16:2Twenty years old was Achaz when he began to reign, and reigned sixteen years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and did not that which was right in the sight of Hashem his God, like David his father.

16:3But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom Hashem cast out from before the children of Israel.

16:4And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

Retzin and Pekach against Yerushalayim

16:5Then Retzin (Rezin) king of Aram (Syria) and Pekach son of Remalyahu king of Israel came up to Yerushalayim to war: and they besieged Achaz, but could not overcome him.

16:6At that time Retzin king of Aram recovered Elat (Elath) to Aram, and drove the Jews from Elot: and the Edomim (Edomites) came to Elat, and dwelt there unto this day.

Achaz sends to Ashur

16:7So Achaz sent messengers to Tiglat Peleser (Tiglath-pileser) king of Ashur (Assyria), saying, “I am your servant and your son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Aram, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me.”

16:8And Achaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of Hashem, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and sent it for a present to the king of Ashur.

16:9And the king of Ashur hearkened unto him: for the king of Ashur went up against Damesek (Damascus), and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Retzin.

The altar from Damesek

16:10And king Achaz went to Damesek to meet Tiglat Pil’eser king of Ashur, and saw an altar that was at Damesek: and king Achaz sent to Uriyah (Urijah) the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship thereof.

16:11And Uriyah the priest built an altar according to all that king Achaz had sent from Damesek: so Uriyah the priest made it against king Achaz came from Damesek.

16:12And when the king was come from Damesek, the king saw the altar: and the king approached to the altar, and offered thereon.

16:13And he burnt his burnt offering and his meal offering, and poured his drink offering, and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings, upon the altar.

16:14And he brought also the bronze altar, which was before Hashem, from the forefront of the house, from between the altar and the house of Hashem, and put it on the north side of the altar.

16:15And king Achaz commanded Uriyah the priest, saying, “Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meal offering, and the king’s burnt sacrifice, and his meal offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meal offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the bronze altar shall be for me to inquire by.”

16:16Thus did Uriyah the priest, according to all that king Achaz commanded.

16:17And king Achaz cut off the borders of the bases, and removed the laver from off them; and took down the sea from off the bronze oxen that were under it, and put it upon a pavement of stones.

16:18And the covert for the sabbath that they had built in the house, and the king’s entry without, turned he from the house of Hashem for the king of Ashur.

The death of Achaz

16:19Now the rest of the acts of Achaz which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Yehudah?

16:20And Achaz slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Chizkiyahu (Hezekiah) his son reigned in his stead.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings they differ from most English Bibles only in chapters 11–12 (11:21 there is 12:1 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
