Text (469) 608-99442 Kings, Chapter 18
Chizkiyah reigns in Yerushalayim, trusts in Hashem, removes the high places and breaks the bronze serpent; Shomron falls to Ashur; Sancheriv takes the fenced cities of Yehudah and Chizkiyah pays him silver and gold, and Ravshakeh mocks Chizkiyahu’s trust in Hashem before the people on the wall.
18:1Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshe’a (Hoshea) son of Elah king of Israel, that Chizkiyah (Hezekiah) the son of Achaz (Ahaz) king of Yehudah (Judah) began to reign.
18:2Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). His mother’s name also was Avi (Abi), the daughter of Zecharyah (Zachariah).
18:3And he did that which was right in the sight of Hashem, according to all that David his father did.
18:4He removed the high places, and broke the images, and cut down the groves, and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moshe (Moses) had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nechushtan (Nehushtan).
18:5He trusted in Hashem God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Yehudah, nor any that were before him.
18:6For he clung to Hashem, and departed not from following Him, but kept His commandments, which Hashem commanded Moshe.
18:7And Hashem was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Ashur (Assyria), and served him not.
18:8He struck the Pelishtim (Philistines), even unto Azzah (Gaza), and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.
18:9And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Chizkiyahu, which was the seventh year of Hoshe’a son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Ashur came up against Shomron (Samaria), and besieged it.
18:10And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Chizkiyah, that is the ninth year of Hoshe’a king of Israel, Shomron was taken.
18:11And the king of Ashur did carry away Israel unto Ashur, and put them in Chalach (Halah) and in Chavor (Habor) by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of Madai (the Medes):
18:12Because they obeyed not the voice of Hashem their God, but transgressed His covenant, and all that Moshe the servant of Hashem commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.
18:13Now in the fourteenth year of king Chizkiyah did Sancheriv (Sennacherib) king of Ashur come up against all the fenced cities of Yehudah, and took them.
18:14And Chizkiyah king of Yehudah sent to the king of Ashur to Lachish, saying, “I have offended; return from me: that which you put on me will I bear.” And the king of Ashur appointed unto Chizkiyah king of Yehudah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.
18:15And Chizkiyah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of Hashem, and in the treasures of the king’s house.
18:16At that time did Chizkiyah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of Hashem, and from the pillars which Chizkiyah king of Yehudah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Ashur.
18:17And the king of Ashur sent Tartan and Ravsaris (Rabsaris) and Ravshakeh (Rab-shakeh) from Lachish to king Chizkiyahu with a great host against Yerushalayim. And they went up and came to Yerushalayim. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.
18:18And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Elyakim (Eliakim) the son of Chilkiyahu (Hilkiah), which was over the household, and Shevnah (Shebna) the scribe, and Yo’ach (Joah) the son of Asaf (Asaph) the recorder.
18:19And Ravshakeh said unto them, “Speak now to Chizkiyahu, Thus says the great king, the king of Ashur, ‘What confidence is this wherein you trust?
18:20You say, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?
18:21Now, behold, you trust upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Mitzrayim (Egypt), on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Par’oh (Pharaoh) king of Mitzrayim unto all that trust on him.
18:22But if you say unto me, “We trust in Hashem our God”: is not that He, whose high places and whose altars Chizkiyahu has taken away, and has said to Yehudah and Yerushalayim, “You shall worship before this altar in Yerushalayim”?
18:23Now therefore, I pray you, give pledges to my lord the king of Ashur, and I will deliver you two thousand horses, if you be able on your part to set riders upon them.
18:24How then will you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Mitzrayim for chariots and for horsemen?
18:25Am I now come up without Hashem against this place to destroy it? Hashem said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’”
18:26Then said Elyakim the son of Chilkiyahu, and Shevnah, and Yo’ach, unto Ravshakeh, “Speak, I pray you, to your servants in Aramit (the Syrian language); for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.”
18:27But Ravshakeh said unto them, “Has my master sent me to your master, and to you, to speak these words? has he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you?”
18:28Then Ravshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Ashur:
18:29Thus says the king, ‘Let not Chizkiyahu deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:
18:30Neither let Chizkiyahu make you trust in Hashem, saying, “Hashem will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Ashur.”
18:31Hearken not to Chizkiyahu: for thus says the king of Ashur, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink every one the waters of his cistern:
18:32Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that you may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Chizkiyahu, when he persuades you, saying, “Hashem will deliver us.”
18:33Has any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Ashur?
18:34Where are the gods of Chamat (Hamath), and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sefarvayim (Sepharvaim), Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Shomron out of my hand?
18:35Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Hashem should deliver Yerushalayim out of my hand?’”
18:36But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, “Answer him not.”
18:37Then came Elyakim the son of Chilkiyah, which was over the household, and Shevna the scribe, and Yo’ach the son of Asaf the recorder, to Chizkiyahu with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Ravshakeh.

Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings they differ from most English Bibles only in chapters 11–12 (11:21 there is 12:1 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
