Text (469) 608-99442 Chronicles, Chapter 26
Uzziyahu reigns fifty and two years in Yerushalayim and seeks God in the days of Zecharyahu; he wars against the Pelishtim, builds towers and fortifies Yerushalayim with a great army, but in his strength he burns incense in the temple of Hashem, is struck with leprosy, and Yotam his son reigns after him.
26:1Then all the people of Yehudah (Judah) took Uzziyahu (Uzziah), who was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father Amatzyahu (Amaziah).
26:2He built Eilot (Eloth), and restored it to Yehudah, after that the king slept with his fathers.
26:3Sixteen years old was Uzziyahu when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). His mother’s name also was Yecholyah (Jecoliah) of Yerushalayim.
26:4And he did that which was right in the sight of Hashem, according to all that his father Amatzyahu did.
26:5And he sought God in the days of Zecharyahu (Zechariah), who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought Hashem, God made him to prosper.
26:6And he went forth and warred against the Pelishtim (Philistines), and broke down the wall of Gat (Gath), and the wall of Yavneh (Jabneh), and the wall of Ashdod, and built cities about Ashdod, and among the Pelishtim.
26:7And God helped him against the Pelishtim, and against the Arvim (Arabians) that dwelt in Gur-Ba’al (Gur-baal), and the Me’unim (Mehunims).
26:8And the Ammonim (Ammonites) gave tribute to Uzziyahu: and his name spread abroad even to the entering in of Mitzrayim (Egypt); for he strengthened himself exceedingly.
26:9Moreover Uzziyahu built towers in Yerushalayim at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and fortified them.
26:10Also he built towers in the desert, and dug many wells: for he had much cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains: husbandmen also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in Karmel (Carmel): for he loved husbandry.
26:11Moreover Uzziyahu had a host of fighting men, that went out to war by bands, according to the number of their account by the hand of Ye’i’el (Jeiel) the scribe and Ma’aseyahu (Maaseiah) the ruler, under the hand of Chananyahu (Hananiah), one of the king’s captains.
26:12The whole number of the chief of the fathers of the mighty men of valour were two thousand and six hundred.
26:13And under their hand was an army, three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred, that made war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
26:14And Uzziyahu prepared for them throughout all the host shields, and spears, and helmets, and habergeons, and bows, and slings to cast stones.
26:15And he made in Yerushalayim engines, invented by cunning men, to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks, to shoot arrows and great stones withal. And his name spread far abroad; for he was marvellously helped, till he was strong.
26:16But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against Hashem his God, and went into the temple of Hashem to burn incense upon the altar of incense.
26:17And Azaryahu (Azariah) the priest went in after him, and with him eighty priests of Hashem, that were valiant men:
26:18And they withstood Uzziyahu the king, and said unto him, “It appertains not unto you, Uzziyahu, to burn incense unto Hashem, but to the priests the sons of Aharon (Aaron), that are consecrated to burn incense: go out of the sanctuary; for you have trespassed; neither shall it be for your honour from Hashem God.”
26:19Then Uzziyahu was angry, and had a censer in his hand to burn incense: and while he was angry with the priests, the leprosy even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of Hashem, from beside the incense altar.
26:20And Azaryahu the chief priest, and all the priests, looked upon him, and, behold, he was leprous in his forehead, and they thrust him out from thence; yea, himself hasted also to go out, because Hashem had struck him.
26:21And Uzziyahu the king was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house, being a leper; for he was cut off from the house of Hashem: and Yotam (Jotham) his son was over the king’s house, judging the people of the land.
26:22Now the rest of the acts of Uzziyahu, first and last, did Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) the prophet, the son of Amotz (Amoz), write.
26:23So Uzziyahu slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings; for they said, “He is a leper”: and Yotam his son reigned in his stead.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Chronicles they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 1, 2, 13 and 14; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
