Text (469) 608-99442 Chronicles, Chapter 25
Amatzyahu reigns in Yerushalayim, sends home the army he hired out of Israel at the word of a man of God, and strikes the children of Se’ir in Gei Melach; he then serves the gods of Se’ir, challenges Yo’ash king of Israel, is defeated at Beit Shemesh, and is slain at Lachish.
25:1Amatzyahu (Amaziah) was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem). And his mother’s name was Yeho’adan (Jehoaddan) of Yerushalayim.
25:2And he did that which was right in the sight of Hashem, but not with a perfect heart.
25:3Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.
25:4But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the Torah in the book of Moshe (Moses), where Hashem commanded, saying, “The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.”
25:5Moreover Amatzyahu gathered Yehudah (Judah) together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Yehudah and Binyamin (Benjamin): and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
25:6He hired also a hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for a hundred talents of silver.
25:7But there came a man of God to him, saying, “O king, let not the army of Israel go with you; for Hashem is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Efrayim (Ephraim).
25:8But if you will go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make you fall before the enemy: for God has power to help, and to cast down.”
25:9And Amatzyahu said to the man of God, “But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel?” And the man of God answered, “Hashem is able to give you much more than this.”
25:10Then Amatzyahu separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Efrayim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Yehudah, and they returned home in great anger.
25:11And Amatzyahu strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to Gei Melach (the valley of salt), and struck of the children of Se’ir (Seir) ten thousand.
25:12And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Yehudah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
25:13But the soldiers of the army which Amatzyahu sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Yehudah, from Shomron (Samaria) even unto Beit Choron (Beth-horon), and struck three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
25:14Now it came to pass, after that Amatzyahu was come from the slaughter of the Edomim (Edomites), that he brought the gods of the children of Se’ir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
25:15Wherefore the anger of Hashem was kindled against Amatzyahu, and He sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, “Why have you sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of your hand?”
25:16And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, “Are you made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why should you be struck?” Then the prophet forbore, and said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not hearkened unto my counsel.”
25:17Then Amatzyahu king of Yehudah took advice, and sent to Yo’ash (Joash), the son of Yeho’achaz (Jehoahaz), the son of Yehu (Jehu), king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us see one another in the face.”
25:18And Yo’ash king of Israel sent to Amatzyahu king of Yehudah, saying, “The thistle that was in Levanon (Lebanon) sent to the cedar that was in Levanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son to wife’: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Levanon, and trod down the thistle.
25:19You say, Lo, you have struck Edom; and your heart lifts you up to boast: abide now at home; why should you meddle to your hurt, that you should fall, even you, and Yehudah with you?”
25:20But Amatzyahu would not hear; for it came of God, that He might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
25:21So Yo’ash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amatzyahu king of Yehudah, at Beit Shemesh (Beth-shemesh), which belongs to Yehudah.
25:22And Yehudah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
25:23And Yo’ash the king of Israel took Amatzyahu king of Yehudah, the son of Yo’ash, the son of Yeho’achaz, at Beit Shemesh, and brought him to Yerushalayim, and broke down the wall of Yerushalayim from the gate of Efrayim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
25:24And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Oved-Edom (Obed-edom), and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages also, and returned to Shomron.
25:25And Amatzyahu the son of Yo’ash king of Yehudah lived after the death of Yo’ash son of Yeho’achaz king of Israel fifteen years.
25:26Now the rest of the acts of Amatzyahu, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Yehudah and Israel?
25:27Now after the time that Amatzyahu did turn away from following Hashem they made a conspiracy against him in Yerushalayim; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.

25:28And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Yehudah.

- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
