Romans, Chapter 14

Paul tells the believers to receive one who is weak in faith and not to judge one another over food or the observance of days, since each lives and dies unto the Master and all shall give account to God. He urges them not to put a stumblingblock in a brother’s way.

Do not judge your brother

14:1Him that is weak in the faith receive you, but not to doubtful disputations.

14:2For one believes that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eats herbs.

14:3Let not him that eats despise him that eats not; and let not him which eats not judge him that eats: for God has received him.

14:4Who are you that judge another man’s servant? to his own master he stands or falls. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

14:5One man esteems one day above another: another esteems every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.

14:6He that regards the day, regards it unto the Master; and he that regards not the day, to the Master he does not regard it. He that eats, eats to the Master, for he gives God thanks; and he that eats not, to the Master he eats not, and gives God thanks.

14:7For none of us lives to himself, and no man dies to himself.

14:8For whether we live, we live unto the Master; and whether we die, we die unto the Master: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Master’s.

14:9For to this end Messiah both died, and rose, and revived, that He might be Master both of the dead and living.

14:10But why do you judge your brother? or why do you set at nought your brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Messiah.

14:11For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 45:23.

14:12So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Do not cause a brother to stumble

14:13Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

14:14I know, and am persuaded by the Master Yeshua (Jesus), that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteems any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

14:15But if your brother be grieved with your food, now you walk not in love. Destroy not him with your food, for whom Messiah died.

14:16Let not then your good be evil spoken of:

14:17For the kingdom of God is not food and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

14:18For he that in these things serves Messiah is acceptable to God, and approved of men.

14:19Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

14:20For food destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eats with offence.

14:21It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby your brother stumbles, or is offended, or is made weak.

14:22Have you faith? have it to yourself before God. Happy is he that condemns not himself in that thing which he allows.

14:23And he that doubts is damned if he eat, because he eats not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
