Philemon, Chapter 1

Paul, a prisoner, greets Philemon and the congregation in his house and gives thanks for his love and faith. He beseeches Philemon for Onesimus, whom he has begotten in his bonds, asking him to receive Onesimus no longer as a servant but as a brother beloved, and sends greetings.

1:1Paul, a prisoner of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

1:2And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the congregation in your house:

1:3Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Master Yeshua the Messiah.

Philemon’s love and faith

1:4I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers,

1:5Hearing of your love and faith, which you have toward the Master Yeshua, and toward all saints;

1:6That the communication of your faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Messiah Yeshua.

1:7For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by you, brother.

Paul’s plea for Onesimus

1:8Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Messiah to enjoin you that which is convenient,

1:9Yet for love’s sake I rather beseech you, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Yeshua the Messiah.

1:10I beseech you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

1:11Which in time past was to you unprofitable, but now profitable to you and to me:

1:12Whom I have sent again: you therefore receive him, that is, my own bowels:

1:13Whom I would have retained with me, that in your stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

1:14But without your mind would I do nothing; that your benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

1:15For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that you should receive him for ever;

1:16Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto you, both in the flesh, and in the Master?

1:17If you count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

1:18If he has wronged you, or owes you ought, put that on my account;

1:19I Paul have written it with my own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to you how you owe unto me even your own self besides.

1:20Yea, brother, let me have joy of you in the Master: refresh my bowels in the Master.

1:21Having confidence in your obedience I wrote unto you, knowing that you will also do more than I say.

Final greetings

1:22But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

1:23There greet you Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Messiah Yeshua;

1:24Mark (Marcus), Aristarchus, Demas, Luke (Lucas), my fellowlabourers.

1:25The grace of our Master Yeshua the Messiah be with your spirit. Amen.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
