Mark, Chapter 9
Yeshua is transfigured on a high mountain before Peter, Ya’akov and Yoḥanan, with Eliyahu and Moshe, and heals a boy with a dumb spirit whom the disciples could not help. He again foretells His death and teaches about greatness, about those who are not against us, and about cutting off what causes one to stumble.
9:1And He said unto them, “Truly I say unto you, That there are some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.”
9:2And after six days Yeshua (Jesus) takes with Him Peter, and Ya’akov (James), and Yoḥanan (John), and leads them up into a high mountain apart by themselves: and He was transfigured before them.
בכעבור שישה ימים לקח ישוע את פטרוס, יעקב ויוחנן ועלה איתם על פסגת הר גבוה. רק ארבעתם היו שם. לפתע זרחו פניו של ישוע בזוהר נפלא;
9:3And His raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller on earth can white them.
9:4And there appeared unto them Eliyahu (Elias) with Moshe (Moses): and they were talking with Yeshua.
9:5And Peter answered and said to Yeshua, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for You, and one for Moshe, and one for Eliyahu.”
9:6For he knew not what to say; for they were sore afraid.
9:7And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son: hear Him.”
9:8And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Yeshua only with themselves.
9:9And as they came down from the mountain, He charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.
9:10And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.
9:11And they asked Him, saying, “Why say the scribes that Eliyahu must first come?”
καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν, λέγοντες ὅτι Λέγουσιν οἱ γραμματεῖς ὅτι Ἠλίαν δεῖ ἐλθεῖν πρῶτον;
9:12And He answered and told them, “Eliyahu truly comes first, and restores all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that He must suffer many things, and be set at nought.
9:13But I say unto you, That Eliyahu is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.”

9:14And when He came to His disciples, He saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.
9:15And straightway all the people, when they beheld Him, were greatly amazed, and running to Him greeted Him.
9:16And He asked the scribes, “What question you with them?”
καὶ ἐπηρώτησε τούς γραμματεῖς, Τί συζητεῖτε πρὸς αὐτούς;
9:17And one of the multitude answered and said, “Rabbi, I have brought unto You my son, which has a dumb spirit;
9:18And wheresoever he takes him, he tears him: and he foams, and gnashes with his teeth, and pines away: and I spoke to Your disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.”
9:19He answers him, and says, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto Me.”
9:20And they brought him unto Him: and when he saw Him, straightway the spirit tore him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
9:21And He asked his father, “How long is it ago since this came unto him?” And he said, “Of a child.
9:22And ofttimes it has cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if You can do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.”
9:23Yeshua said unto him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes.”
9:24And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, “Master, I believe; help my unbelief.”
9:25When Yeshua saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, “You dumb and deaf spirit, I charge you, come out of him, and enter no more into him.”
9:26And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, “He is dead.”
9:27But Yeshua took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.
9:28And when He was come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could not we cast him out?”
καὶ εἰσελθόντα αὐτὸν εἰς οἶκον, οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν κατ’ ἰδίαν ὅτι Ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἠδυνήθημεν ἐκβαλεῖν αὐτό;
9:29And He said unto them, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.”
9:30And they departed thence, and passed through Galil (Galilee); and He would not that any man should know it.
9:31For He taught His disciples, and said unto them, “The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill Him; and after that He is killed, He shall rise the third day.”
9:32But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask Him.
9:33And He came to Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum): and being in the house He asked them, “What was it that you disputed among yourselves by the way?”
Καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Καπερναούμ· καὶ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ γενόμενος ἐπηρώτα αὐτούς, Τί ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς διελογίζεσθε;
9:34But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
9:35And He sat down, and called the Twelve, and says unto them, “If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.”
9:36And He took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when He had taken him in His arms, He said unto them,
9:37“Whosoever shall receive one of such children in My name, receives Me: and whosoever shall receive Me, receives not Me, but Him that sent Me.”
9:38And Yoḥanan answered Him, saying, “Rabbi, we saw one casting out demons in Your name, and he follows not us: and we forbad him, because he follows not us.”
9:39But Yeshua said, “Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in My name, that can lightly speak evil of Me.

9:41For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in My name, because you belong to Messiah, truly I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

9:42And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in Me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
9:43And if your hand offend you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

9:50Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.”

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
