Mark, Chapter 5

In the country of the Gadarenes Yeshua casts a legion of unclean spirits out of a man into a herd of swine, and sends the healed man to tell what the Lord has done. Back across the sea, a woman is healed by touching His garment, and He raises the daughter of Ya’ir.

5:1And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

5:2And when He was come out of the ship, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

5:3Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

5:4Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5:5And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones.

5:6But when he saw Yeshua (Jesus) afar off, he ran and worshipped Him,

5:7And cried with a loud voice, and said, “What have I to do with You, Yeshua, You Son of the most high God? I adjure You by God, that You torment me not.”

5:8For He said unto him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit.”

5:9And He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion: for we are many.”

5:10And he besought Him much that He would not send them away out of the country.

5:11Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding.

5:12And all the demons besought Him, saying, “Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.”

5:13And forthwith Yeshua gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea.

5:14And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

5:15And they come to Yeshua, and see him that was possessed with demons, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

5:16And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with demons, and also concerning the swine.

5:17And they began to pray Him to depart out of their coasts.

5:18And when He was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with demons prayed Him that he might be with Him.

5:19Howbeit Yeshua permitted him not, but says unto him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them how great things the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion on you.”

5:20And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Yeshua had done for him: and all men did marvel.

A ruler of the synagogue pleads

5:21And when Yeshua was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto Him: and He was nigh unto the sea.

5:22And, behold, there comes one of the rulers of the synagogue, Ya’ir (Jairus) by name; and when he saw Him, he fell at His feet,

5:23And besought Him greatly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death: I pray You, come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.”

5:24And Yeshua went with him; and much people followed Him, and thronged Him.

A woman touches His garment

5:25And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,

5:26And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,

5:27When she had heard of Yeshua, came in the press behind, and touched His garment.

5:28For she said, “If I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole.”

5:29And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

5:30And Yeshua, immediately knowing in Himself that virtue had gone out of Him, turned Him about in the press, and said, “Who touched My clothes?”

καὶ εὐθέως ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐπιγνοὺς ἐν ἑαυτῷ τὴν ἐξ αὐτοῦ δύναμιν ἐξελθοῦσαν, ἐπιστραφεὶς ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ, ἔλεγε, Τίς μου ἥψατο τῶν ἱματίων;

5:31And His disciples said unto Him, “You see the multitude thronging You, and say You, ‘Who touched Me?’”

καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, Βλέπεις τὸν ὄχλον συνθλίβοντά σε, καὶ λέγεις, Τίς μου ἥψατο;

5:32And He looked round about to see her that had done this thing.

5:33But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before Him, and told Him all the truth.

5:34And He said unto her, “Daughter, your faith has made you whole; go in peace, and be whole of your plague.”

The damsel is raised

5:35While He yet spoke, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, “Your daughter is dead: why trouble you the Teacher any further?”

Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος, ἔρχονται ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου, λέγοντες ὅτι Ἡ θυγάτηρ σου ἀπέθανε· τί ἔτι σκύλλεις τὸν διδάσκαλον;

5:36As soon as Yeshua heard the word that was spoken, He says unto the ruler of the synagogue, “Be not afraid, only believe.”

5:37And He permitted no man to follow Him, save Peter, and Ya’akov (James), and Yoḥanan (John) the brother of Ya’akov.

5:38And He comes to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and sees the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

5:39And when He was come in, He says unto them, “Why make you this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleeps.”

5:40And they laughed Him to scorn. But when He had put them all out, He takes the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with Him, and enters in where the damsel was lying.

5:41And He took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, “Talitha cumi”; which is, being interpreted, “Damsel, I say unto you, arise.”

5:42And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

5:43And He charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
