Mark, Chapter 3

Yeshua heals a man’s withered hand on the sabbath, and the Pharisees plot with the Herodians against Him. Multitudes follow Him to the sea; He ordains the Twelve, answers the scribes who say He casts out demons by Ba’al-Zevuv, and names those who do God’s will as His family.

3:1And He entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.

3:2And they watched Him, whether He would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse Him.

3:3And He says unto the man which had the withered hand, “Stand forth.”

3:4And He says unto them, “Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill?” But they held their peace.

3:5And when He had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He says unto the man, “Stretch forth your hand.” And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

3:6And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.

Multitudes by the sea

3:7But Yeshua (Jesus) withdrew Himself with His disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galil (Galilee) followed Him, and from Yehudah (Judaea),

3:8And from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and from Edom (Idumaea), and from beyond Yarden (Jordan); and they about Tzor (Tyre) and Tzidon (Sidon), a great multitude, when they had heard what great things He did, came unto Him.

3:9And He spoke to His disciples, that a small ship should wait on Him because of the multitude, lest they should throng Him.

3:10For He had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon Him for to touch Him, as many as had plagues.

3:11And unclean spirits, when they saw Him, fell down before Him, and cried, saying, “You are the Son of God.”

3:12And He straitly charged them that they should not make Him known.

The Twelve are chosen

3:13And He goes up into a mountain, and calls unto Him whom He would: and they came unto Him.

3:14And He ordained twelve, that they should be with Him, and that He might send them forth to preach,

3:15And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out demons:

3:16And Shim’on (Simon) He surnamed Peter;

3:17And Ya’akov (James) the son of Zavdai (Zebedee), and Yoḥanan (John) the brother of Ya’akov; and He surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

3:18And Andrew, and Philip, and Bar-Talmai (Bartholomew), and Mattai (Matthew), and Toma (Thomas), and Ya’akov the son of Ḥalfai (Alphaeus), and Taddai (Thaddaeus), and Shim’on the Kanai (Canaanite),

3:19And Yehudah Ish-Keriyot (Judas Iscariot), which also betrayed Him: and they went into a house.

A house divided

3:20And the multitude comes together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.

3:21And when His friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on Him: for they said, “He is beside Himself.”

3:22And the scribes which came down from Yerushalayim said, “He has Ba’al-Zevuv (Beelzebub), and by the prince of the demons casts He out demons.”

3:23And He called them unto Him, and said unto them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?

καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτούς, ἐν παραβολαῖς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς, Πῶς δύναται Σατανᾶς Σατανᾶν ἐκβάλλειν;

3:24And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

3:25And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand.

3:26And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but has an end.

3:27No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.

3:28Truly I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:

3:29But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit has never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation”:

3:30Because they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Yeshua’s mother and brethren

3:31There came then His brethren and His mother, and, standing without, sent unto Him, calling Him.

3:32And the multitude sat about Him, and they said unto Him, “Behold, Your mother and Your brethren without seek for You.”

3:33And He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brethren?”

καὶ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς λέγων, Τίς ἐστιν ἡ μήτηρ μου ἤ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου;

3:34And He looked round about on them which sat about Him, and said, “Behold My mother and My brethren!

3:35For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is My brother, and My sister, and mother.”

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
