Luke, Chapter 16

Yeshua tells His disciples the parable of the unjust steward and teaches that no servant can serve God and mammon. When the Pharisees deride Him, He speaks of the Torah and of divorce, and tells of the rich man and the beggar El’azar, who after death are separated by a great gulf.

16:1And He said also unto His disciples, “There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods.

16:2And he called him, and said unto him, ‘How is it that I hear this of you? give an account of your stewardship; for you may be no longer steward.’

16:3Then the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do? for my lord takes away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed.

16:4I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.’

16:5So he called every one of his lord’s debtors unto him, and said unto the first, ‘How much owe you unto my lord?’

καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος ἕνα ἕκαστον τῶν χρεωφειλετῶν τοῦ κυρίου ἑαυτοῦ, ἔλεγε τῷ πρώτῳ, Πόσον ὀφείλεις τῷ κυρίῳ μου;

16:6And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ And he said unto him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty.’

16:7Then said he to another, ‘And how much owe you?’ And he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said unto him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’

16:8And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

16:9And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when you fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

16:10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.

16:11If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?

εἰ οὖν ἐν τῷ ἀδίκῳ μαμωνᾷ πιστοὶ οὐκ ἐγένεσθε, τὸ ἀληθινὸν τίς ὑμῖν πιστεύσει;

16:12And if you have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?

καὶ εἰ ἐν τῷ ἀλλοτρίῳ πιστοὶ οὐκ ἐγένεσθε, τὸ ὑμέτερον τίς ὑμῖν δώσει;

16:13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

The Torah and the kingdom

16:14And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided Him.

16:15And He said unto them, “You are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

16:16The Torah and the prophets were until Yoḥanan (John): since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it.

16:17And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the Torah to fail.

16:18Whoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery: and whoever marries her that is put away from her husband commits adultery.

The rich man and El’azar

16:19There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

16:20And there was a certain beggar named El’azar (Lazarus), which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

16:21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

16:22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Avraham’s (Abraham’s) bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

16:23And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and sees Avraham afar off, and El’azar in his bosom.

16:24And he cried and said, ‘Father Avraham, have mercy on me, and send El’azar, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’

16:25But Avraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise El’azar evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.

16:26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.’

16:27Then he said, ‘I pray you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house:

16:28For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’

16:29Avraham says unto him, ‘They have Moshe (Moses) and the prophets; let them hear them.’

16:30And he said, ‘Nay, father Avraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.’

16:31And he said unto him, ‘If they hear not Moshe and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.’”

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
