James, Chapter 4

Ya’akov traces wars and fightings to lust and asking amiss, and warns that friendship with the world is enmity with God. He calls his readers to submit to God, resist the devil and humble themselves, not to speak evil of one another, and not to boast of tomorrow but say, “If the Lord will.”

4:1From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

Πόθεν πόλεμοι καὶ μάχαι ἐν ὑμῖν; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν, ἐκ τῶν ἡδονῶν ὑμῶν τῶν στρατευομένων ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν ὑμῶν;

4:2You lust, and have not: you kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: you fight and war, yet you have not, because you ask not.

4:3You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may consume it upon your lusts.

Friendship with the world

4:4You adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

4:5Do you think that the scripture says in vain, “The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy”?

ἢ δοκεῖτε ὅτι κενῶς ἡ γραφὴ λέγει, Πρὸς φθόνον ἐπιποθεῖ τὸ πνεῦμα ὃ κατῴκησεν ἐν ἡμῖν;

4:6But He gives more grace. Wherefore He says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.”

Tenakh. Quotes Proverbs 3:34.
Submit yourselves to God

4:7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

4:8Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded.

4:9Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

4:10Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.

Do not judge one another

4:11Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaks evil of his brother, and judges his brother, speaks evil of the Torah, and judges the Torah: but if you judge the Torah, you are not a doer of the Torah, but a judge.

4:12There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who are you that judge another?

εἷς ἐστιν ὁ νομοθέτης, ὁ δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι· σὺ τίς εἶ ὃς κρίνεις τὸν ἕτερον;

If the Lord will

4:13Go to now, you that say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:”

4:14Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.

4:15For that you ought to say, “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

4:16But now you rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

4:17Therefore to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
