Galatians, Chapter 5

Paul urges the Galatians to stand fast in the liberty of Messiah and warns that those circumcised to be justified are debtors to do the whole Torah. He calls them to serve one another in love and walk in the Spirit, and sets the works of the flesh against the fruit of the Spirit.

Stand fast in liberty

5:1Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Messiah has made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

5:2Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if you be circumcised, Messiah shall profit you nothing.

5:3For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole Torah.

5:4Messiah is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the Torah; you are fallen from grace.

5:5For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

5:6For in Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which works by love.

5:7You did run well; who did hinder you that you should not obey the truth?

ἐτρέχετε καλῶς· τίς ὑμᾶς ἀνέκοψε τῇ ἀληθείᾳ μὴ πείθεσθαι;

5:8This persuasion comes not of Him that calls you.

5:9A little leaven leavens the whole lump.

5:10I have confidence in you through the Master, that you will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubles you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.

5:11And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased.

5:12I would they were even cut off which trouble you.

Serve one another in love

5:13For, brethren, you have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

5:14For all the Torah is fulfilled in one word, even in this; “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

Tenakh. Quotes Leviticus 19:18.

5:15But if you bite and devour one another, take heed that you be not consumed one of another.

Walk in the Spirit

5:16This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

5:17For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that you cannot do the things that you would.

5:18But if you be led of the Spirit, you are not under the Torah.

5:19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

5:20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

5:21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

The fruit of the Spirit

5:22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

5:23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

5:24And they that are Messiah’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

5:25If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

5:26Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
