Colossians, Chapter 2

Paul tells of his conflict for the Colossians and those at Laodicea, and urges them to walk in Messiah Yeshua, in whom dwells all the fulness of the Godhead. He warns them against philosophy and the tradition of men, and against those who judge them in food and holydays or bind them with ordinances.

2:1For I would that you knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh;

2:2That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Messiah;

2:3In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

2:4And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.

2:5For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Messiah.

Walk in Him

2:6As you have therefore received Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) the Master, so walk you in Him:

2:7Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Complete in Him

2:8Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Messiah.

2:9For in Him dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

2:10And you are complete in Him, which is the head of all principality and power:

2:11In whom also you are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Messiah:

2:12Buried with Him in immersion, wherein also you are risen with Him through the faith of the operation of God, who has raised Him from the dead.

2:13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, has He quickened together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

2:14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to His cross;

2:15And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Let no man judge you

2:16Let no man therefore judge you in food, or in drink, or in respect of a holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

2:17Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Messiah.

2:18Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

2:19And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increases with the increase of God.

Dead with Messiah to ordinances

2:20Wherefore if you be dead with Messiah from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are you subject to ordinances,

2:21(Touch not; taste not; handle not;

2:22Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men?

ἅ ἐστι πάντα εἰς φθορὰν τῇ ἀποχρήσει, κατὰ τὰ ἐντάλματα καὶ διδασκαλίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων;

2:23Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
