1 Timothy, Chapter 6

Paul tells servants to honour their masters and warns against those who teach otherwise and suppose that gain is godliness, for the love of money is the root of all evil. He charges Timothy to fight the good fight of faith, tells him what to command the rich, and urges him to keep what was committed to his trust.

6:1Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and His doctrine be not blasphemed.

6:2And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.

False teaching and the love of money

6:3If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Master Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;

6:4He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof comes envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

6:5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw yourself.

6:6But godliness with contentment is great gain.

6:7For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

6:8And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

6:9But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

6:10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Fight the good fight of faith

6:11But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

6:12Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto you are also called, and have professed a good profession before many witnesses.

6:13I give you charge in the sight of God, who quickens all things, and before Messiah Yeshua, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;

6:14That you keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Master Yeshua the Messiah:

6:15Which in His times He shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

טווכשיגיע הזמן המתאים יתגלה המשיח אלינו מהשמים, על־ידי האלוהים המבורך והעליון, מלך המלכים ואדון האדונים;

6:16Who only has immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

A charge to the rich

6:17Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

6:18That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;

6:19Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Keep what is committed to you

6:20O Timothy, keep that which is committed to your trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

6:21Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
