1 Timothy, Chapter 3
Paul sets out what is required of a bishop and of deacons and their wives: they must be blameless and sober and rule their own houses well. He writes so that Timothy may know how to behave in the house of God, the congregation of the living God, and declares the great mystery of godliness.
3:1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desires a good work.
3:2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3:3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
3:4One that rules well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
3:5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the congregation of God?)
3:6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
3:7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
3:8Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
3:9Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
3:10And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
3:11Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
3:12Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
3:13For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Messiah Yeshua (Jesus).
3:14These things write I unto you, hoping to come unto you shortly:
3:15But if I tarry long, that you may know how you ought to behave yourself in the house of God, which is the congregation of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
3:16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
