1 Peter, Chapter 5

Peter exhorts the elders to feed the flock of God willingly until the chief Shepherd appears, and the younger to submit and all to be clothed with humility. He warns them to resist the devil, commends Silvanus, and sends greetings from Bavel and from Mark.

5:1The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Messiah, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

5:2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;

5:3Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

5:4And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, you shall receive a crown of glory that fades not away.

Humble yourselves

5:5Likewise, you younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

Tenakh. Quotes Proverbs 3:34.

5:6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time:

5:7Casting all your care upon Him; for He cares for you.

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 55:23 (KJV 55:22).

5:8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour:

5:9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

5:10But the God of all grace, who has called us unto His eternal glory by Messiah Yeshua (Jesus), after that you have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

5:11To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Final greetings

5:12By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein you stand.

5:13The congregation that is at Bavel (Babylon), elected together with you, greets you; and so does Mark (Marcus) my son.

5:14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be with you all that are in Messiah Yeshua. Amen.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
