1 John, Chapter 1
Yoḥanan declares the Word of life, which the apostles heard, saw and handled, so that the readers may share their fellowship with the Father and His Son. God is light; those who walk in the light have fellowship, and if they confess their sins He forgives and cleanses them.
1:1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;
1:2(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
1:3That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah.
1:4And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
καὶ ταῦτα γράφομεν ὑμῖν, ἵνα ἡ χαρὰ ὑμῶν ᾖ πεπληρωμένη.
דאנו מספרים לכם זאת מסיבה נוספת: כדי שגם אתם תימלאו שמחה רבה כמונו.
1:5This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all.
1:6If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετ’ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐν τῷ σκότει περιπατῶμεν, ψευδόμεθα, καὶ οὐ ποιοῦμεν τὴν ἀλήθειαν·
ואם אנו אומרים שיש לנו התחברות עם אלוהים בשעה שאנו חוטאים וחיים בחושך, אנחנו משקרים!
1:7But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Yeshua the Messiah His Son cleanses us from all sin.
1:8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ ἔχομεν, ἑαυτοὺς πλανῶμεν, καὶ ἡ ἀλήθεια οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν.
חאם אנו טוענים שאין בנו חטא, אנו משלים את עצמנו ומסרבים להכיר באמת.
1:9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
ἐὰν ὁμολογῶμεν τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν, πιστός ἐστι καὶ δίκαιος ἵνα ἀφῇ ἡμῖν τὰς ἁμαρτίας, καὶ καθαρίσῃ ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἀδικίας.
טאך אם נתוודה על חטאינו (לפני אלוהים), אנו בטוחים שיסלח לנו ויטהר אותנו מכל רע.
1:10If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ὅτι οὐχ ἡμαρτήκαμεν, ψεύστην ποιοῦμεν αὐτὸν, καὶ ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν.
יאם אנו מכחישים שחטאנו, לא זו בלבד שאנו משקרים, אנו עושים גם את אלוהים לשקרן, שכן הוא אמר שכולנו חטאנו.

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”

Changes: shown verse by verse beside the English and Greek, without its section headings and footnotes; where it joins verses, the later verse points to the joined one; 3 John 15 is shown with verse 14. Our arrangement of this Hebrew text is shared under the same licence. Where the Greek has Kyrios for God, this translation writes ה׳ (Hashem), not the sacred name.
- Quotations
- A note under a verse links each quotation from the Tenakh to our Tenakh chapter page. Those pages follow the Hebrew Bible’s verse numbers; where they differ from the King James numbers, both are given.
