11:1And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

Vayehi ḥol-ha'aretz safah eḥat udevarim aḥadim.

אוַיְהִ֥י כָל־הָאָ֖רֶץ שָׂפָ֣ה אֶחָ֑ת וּדְבָרִ֖ים אֲחָדִֽים׃

11:2And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

Vayehi benase'am mikedem vayimtze'u vik'ah be'eretz Shin'ar vayeshevu sham.

11:3And they said one to another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and slime they had for mortar.

Vayomeru ish el-re'ehu havah nilbenah levenim venisrefah lisrefah vatehi lahem halevenah le'aven vehaḥemar hayah lahem laḥomer.

11:4And they said, “Come, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.”

Vayomeru havah nivneh-lanu ir umigdal verosho vashamayim vena'aseh-lanu shem pen-nafutz al-penei ḥol-ha'aretz.

11:5And Hashem came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men had built.

Vayered Adonai lir'ot et-ha'ir ve'et-hamigdal asher banu benei ha'adam.

11:6And Hashem said, “Behold, the people is one, and they all have one language; and this they begin to do; and now nothing will be withheld from them which they have schemed to do.

Vayomer Adonai hen am eḥad vesafah aḥat leḥulam vezeh haḥilam la'asot ve'atah lo-yibatzer mehem kol asher yazemu la'asot.

11:7Come, let Us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

11:8So Hashem scattered them abroad from there upon the face of all the earth; and they stopped building the city.

Haftarah · Isaiah 54:1–55:5

Haftarah

הפטרה

Chabad and Sephardic communities read Isaiah 54:1–10; Ashkenazi communities continue through 55:5. The haftarah opens with the promise to the barren one and recalls “the waters of Noach” (54:9). When Shabbat Noach falls on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan (1 Cheshvan), the Maftir is the Rosh Chodesh reading, Numbers 28:9–15, and the haftarah for Shabbat Rosh Chodesh, Isaiah 66, is read instead.

54:1“Sing, O barren, you who did not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you who did not travail with child; for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife,” says Hashem.
